Wiki Dunong: An Eduwiki Initiative in the Philippines[edit]

Abstract/description[edit]

There are a multitude of resources available online for consumption by both teachers and students; however, due to a lack of fact-checking, misinformation is common, resulting in learners receiving the wrong information. The group, as editors in numerous wiki projects, seeks to conduct sessions that will train users of Wikiprojects, notably Wikipedia, on how to maximize and utilize them; hence, we launched the WikiDunong Program.

The WikiDunong project aims to assist teachers and educators in the use and creation of open educational resources; distribute offline wikis to schools and barangay reading centers; promote Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom through training and module distribution; and establish a pilot program of Wiki Open High as a capacity-building program for youth. "Dunong" is a Tagalog term meaning intelligence, knowledge, and wisdom. With this project, we hope to spread awareness about wiki projects.

Initially, this was piloted in a public school here in the Philippines, and three target schools are next to implement this program.

Relationship to ESEAP or to the theme[edit]

Partnership with educational institutions remains one of the significant collaborations between the Wikimedians and the education sector, resulting in Wiki Clubs in several countries and training such as Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom. Schools are gateways for connecting the Wikiprojects to students and teachers. With several affiliates working on the education aspect of Wikimedia projects, we aim to provide, through our direct experience, the strategies they may implement to build a successful program of their own. That includes segmenting the audiences - Will it be for primary, secondary, or tertiary? Then we target the specific demographic - building materials relatable to the selected level of students. Lastly, the positioning - leaving a mindset among these participants that wiki projects are indeed helpful in their educational track.
