AfroCreatives WikiProject +film Ghana Edition
AfroCreatives WikiProject +film Ghana Edition is a campaign under the AfroCreatives WikiProject. The project is a collaboration between Open Foundation West Africa, FESPACO, the National Film Authority, and the Wikimedia Foundation.
By mobilizing Ghanaian film creatives, professionals, and film enthusiasts, ACWP +film Ghana Edition aims to measurably enhance information on Wikipedia about the art and industry of Ghanaian film, including:
- The history of Ghanaian cinema
- Biographies of notable Ghanaian creatives and professionals that span the industry
- Notable Ghanaian movies and television series
- Ghanaian studios, streaming platforms, awards, festivals, guilds, film schools, and other institutions that form the industry ecosystem
- Developments in animation, AR, VR, and other technologies shaping the African film industry
- Film financing, government policies, skills development, and other key industry issues
AfroCreatives WikiProject +film Ghana Edition Workshop
In the lead-up to the campaign, participants are encouraged to join an in-person training session to learn how to contribute to Wikipedia and other Wiki projects, or if already familiar with editing, to refresh their skills.
Dates: Wednesday, August 14, 2024.
Time: 10am - 3:30pm.
Venue: Open Foundation West Africa (Ground Floor, Sal Heights [GA-162-2157], adjacent Dimensa Restaurant, Abelenkpe, Accra).

How to Participate
Participating in the AfroCreatives Edit-a-thon is a rewarding way to contribute to the global knowledge base while shining a light on Ghanaian and African cinema. Here’s how you can get involved:
- Create a Wikipedia Account: If you don’t have a Wikipedia account, you’ll need to create one. Visit Wikipedia's sign-up page to get started. Make sure to use a unique username.
- Register for the Event: To officially join the edit-a-thon, kindly click on the "Register for event" on the promotional materials. This will direct you to the registration form, where you'll need to fill in your details.
- After registering, you will receive a confirmation email.
- Dashboard confirmation: Once registered, you may be given access to a Wikipedia Dashboard specifically set up for the edit-a-thon. The dashboard will allow you to track your contributions and see what other participants are working on.
- Contribute to Wikipedia: You can either improve existing articles related to Ghanaian creatives and African cinema or create new articles that are not yet covered on Wikipedia. Click on the Article List to find a list of articles where you can:
Edit Existing Articles
- Add Reliable Sources: Improve the credibility of existing articles by adding citations from reliable sources.
- Enhance Content: Expand sections of articles that are underdeveloped, such as biographies of Ghanaian filmmakers or overviews of significant African films.
- Correct Information: Fix any inaccuracies or outdated information.
Create New Articles:
- Research Your Topic: Make sure your topic meets Wikipedia’s notability criteria by researching and gathering reliable sources.
- Write a Well-Structured Article: Use clear headings, concise language, and ensure that all information is properly cited.
- Submit Your Draft: If you're unsure about the quality of your article, you can first submit it as a draft for review by more experienced editors before moving it to the main article space.

- 1st Runner-up:
- Prize: $50
- Criteria: Given to the participant who comes close to the top spot with substantial contributions and engagement.
- 2nd Runner-up:
- Prize: $30
- Criteria: Recognizes a participant who has shown dedication and effort throughout the edit-a-thon.
- Top Female Contributor:
- Prize: $30
- Criteria: This prize is specifically for the most outstanding female participant. It encourages and celebrates the involvement of women in Wikipedia editing, recognizing the quality and quantity of their contributions.
- Best Photo on Wikimedia Commons:
- Prize: $30
- Criteria: Awarded for the best photo uploaded to Wikimedia Commons during the edit-a-thon. The photo should be related to African cinema or filmmaking and must be of high quality with proper metadata and descriptions.
