Feminism and Folklore in Nigeria 2024

Feminism and Folklore is an international writing contest organized at Wikipedia annually in the month of February and March to document folk cultures and women in folklore in different regions of the world on Wikipedia. This project is the Wikipedia edition of the photography campaign Wiki Loves Folklore (WLF) which is organized on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore traditions around the world.

The primary objective of this project is to bridge the gender gap in the representation of women in Nigerian folklore on Wikipedia. Our focus encompasses comprehensive documentation, representation, and celebration of women contributors, with a specific focus on women folk artists and singers. The project's overarching goal is to create a more inclusive portrayal of cultural heritage on Wikipedia through the thorough documentation of women's narratives in Nigerian folklore. Beyond documentation, a key aspect of this project is the active celebration of women contributors, highlighting their significant achievements and contributions to Nigerian folklore. Additionally, our commitment extends to translating these wikipedia articles into Igbo and Yoruba languages, ensuring wider accessibility and preserving these cultural traditions for future generations.

Through this project, our aim is to empower and document the narratives of women in Nigerian folklore, ensuring their stories and experiences receive equitable representation.

Theme

This year Feminism and Folklore will focus on feminism, women's issues, and gender-centric topics, incorporating a Wiki Loves Folklore gender gap emphasis and a folk culture theme on Wikipedia.

Rules and guidelines

• The expanded or new article should have a minimum 4000 bytes and/or 400 words.
• The article should not be a poorly machine translated.
• The article should be expanded or created between 1 April and May 31.
• The article should be within theme women artists and singers in Nigerian Folklore
• The article must not be Orphan.
• There should be no copyright violations and notability issues and the article should have proper references as per local Wikipedia policies.
