Summary

Description

English: Put some magnesium (both chunks and scraping) into a dent of a brick. Light the magnesium by a burner and spray it with water (use a syringe). A strong ignition occurs (often with lots of sparks), as a result of the two exoenergetic reactions, described by the equations:

Mg(s) + H2O(l) = MgO(s) + H2(g)

2H2(g) + O2(g) = 2H2O(g)

The reason is the reaction of magnesium with water. The liberated hydrogen ignites instantaneously. Instead of fading up, the glow transits into a small fire. Often, minor explosions occur due to formation of a mixture of hydrogen and air, strengthened by the effect due to the contact of the cold water and the hot metal. This is an example that in some cases the water is not capable to extinguish the fire.
