Summary

Description

x M(s) + y/2 O2(g) = MxOy(s)

English: Seven different powdered metals (in a random order: Zn, Fe, Mg, Al, Cu, Se, Ni) are placed in test tubes for easier manipulation. A burner (torch) is used to initiate the oxidation. The metal powders are slowly and cautiously poured directly into the flame. All of them burn with different intensities; some with sparks (Fe, Mg, Al), others produce colored flame (Cu, Zn, Se).

At the very beginning, a piece of aluminum metal is put in the flame. The metal melts but it does not burn. When aluminum powder is poured into the flame, it “catches fire” and burns with sparks. This implies that the speed of the reaction depends on the particle size: the smaller the particles the faster the reaction. The general (and main) equation for the oxidation of the metals used in this experiment can be written as:

x M(s) + y/2 O2(g) = MxOy(s)
