English: Oxidation properties of manganese(VII) oxide

Ethanol is slowly and carefully added to a test-tube filled by ⅓ with concentrated sulfuric acid, in order to avoid mixing of the two layers. After that, potassium permanganate crystals are added to the test-tube. At the beginning, the crystals come in contact with the sulfuric acid and a strong oxidizing agent is being formed – manganese(VII) oxide, that has green color:

2KMnO4(s) + H2SO4(l) = K2SO4(aq) + Mn2O7(s) + H2O(l)

Slowly, it travels to the surface of the acid layer and comes in contact with the ethanol. In contact with organic substances, Mn2O7 decomposes:

2Mn2O7(s) = 4MnO2(s) + 3O2(g)

2Mn2O7(s) = 4MnO2(s) + 2O3(g)

and the organic compound is oxidized to carbon dioxide and water:

C2H5OH(aq) + 3O2 = 2CO2(g) + 3H2O(l)

Македонски: Оксидациони својства на манган(VII) оксид

Во епрувета полна до ⅓ со концентрирана сулфурна киселина, внимателно се додава етанол, без притоа да се измешаат двата слоја. Во епруветата се додаваат кристалчиња од калиум перманганат. На почетокот, калиум перманганатот доаѓа во допир со сулфурната киселина при што се образува силно оксидационо средство – манган(VII) оксид (Mn2O7) што има зелена боја:

2KMnO4(s) + H2SO4(l) = K2SO4(aq) + Mn2O7(s) + H2O(l)

Полека, тој се искачува кон површината од слојот со сулфурна киселина и доаѓа во допир со етанолот. Во допир со органски супстанци Mn2O7 се разложува:

2Mn2O7(s) = 4MnO2(s) + 3O2(g)

2Mn2O7(s) = 4MnO2(s) + 2O3(g)

а органското соединение се оксидира до јаглерод диоксид и вода:

C2H5OH(aq) + 3O2 = 2CO2(g) + 3H2O(l)
