Project idea[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?[edit]

At present there is no easy way to let other know and verify the contribution and participation in Wikimedia projects. The problem increases if someone is active in multiple projects. Endorsement and recognition the skills or accomplishments of individual Wikipedians should be more standard.

What is your solution?[edit]

Digital badges (Open Badges) will be provided upon the completion/participation in different ares of Wikimedia Movements. It will be similar as the 'Banstars' but it will be more automated and will be build upon standard tools. A standalone tool will check and maintain the progress to get a new badge. It will also list all the badges of a wikipedian and s/he will be able to share them.

Project goals[edit]

Project plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

We will develop a standalone tool to list the users who will receive digital badges for their contribution on the specific criteria. The tool will have several components. For getting the statistical data we will use the existing Labs tools and if required we may develop a new one. Based on the statistical data several list will be prepared who will receive the badges. Badges will be posted to the userpage.

On brief the tool will do the following tasks

  • Gather user statistics
  • Prepare list of users based on defined criteria
  • Store these data in 'WikiBadge' portal
  • Post 'WikiBadge' to users page

Budget[edit]

This amount will be used to fund a six-month development effort and the badges which will be mailed to the users postal address. This includes hiring one or more additional developers, probably also include the temporary hiring of a designer to make the badge designs. In last 2/3 month i may need part time assistance to mail the badges to the postal addresses. Along with this a full time project manager will work in this project to make it successful.

When the tools will start performing (hopefully after 4/5 month) we will publish the statistics and start sending the badges. We have a budget to send badges for 10 weeks. All the contribution badges will be send once in a week. But there will be some other badges like the first edit, first image upload and so on. These badges will be sent daily in alternate days.

Here i would like to mention one important note that i am willing to complete the project lower amount than the $15000, and this is the maximum limit.

Community engagement[edit]

I was planning to build this tool and discussed with a number of Bengali community members and also discussed in the Village pump. All of them agreed that this will be a great tool to encourage the new contributors as well as the existing ones. Before submitting the proposal i also discussed this proposal (Check the Bengali Village Pump https://bn.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:VP#Wikibadge) and many of the active editors agreed to work on the project.

Sustainability[edit]

Within the 6 month time line i will release a good working version of the tool. And there are huge opportunity to extend the tool and use it on other different projects. As it will be a open source tool so from the day 1 others can join the project and contribute. After the 6month period i will continue to extend my myself and will ask others help to make it perfect.

Measures of success[edit]

Need target-setting tips? Note: in addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some Global Metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project. When the tool will be able to generate the list of user based on the mentioned criteria and post then to the user page accordingly then i will say it is complete. Earlier i mentioned several key criteria to measure the contribution of a individual user. Those will be considered as key to success.
