1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

  • Strategy 1: Mobilizing and sensitizing undergraduate Nigerian youths on open climate

    • The project educated youths in the following selected Nigerian universities, University of Ilorin, Federal University Kashere, University of Port Harcourt, University of Ibadan, Summit University Offa, and the University of Benin, on climate and environmental issues through outreach and advocacy visits. This was done with the help of mission-aligned organizations like the Friends of Earth Nigeria/Environmental Right Action, Lekan Bakare Foundation and the Africa Network for Environment & Economic Justice (ANEEJ). The project followed a train-the-trainer technique where the leaders of the selected Fan Clubs were trained and given proper insight on what the project is all about, to enable them to effectively share their gained knowledge with members of their clubs. The fan club leaders were trained using some self-developed, project-focused materials, as well as some materials from the outreach dashboard.

  • To achieve the project goals, a series of online and physical sessions were held across the universities:
    • The core organisers hosted the onboarding session for the project, to introduce participants to the project and also spotlight the campaign’s partners, on July 1st, 2023. The session was Moderated by Omorodion Okuonghae and the following partners were spotlighted; Alex Stinson (Wikimedia Foundation) and Lekan Bakare (Lekan Bakare Foundation).
    • The 1st Wiki Climate Campus Tour Nigeria Webinar was held on July 8th, 2023. Participants were trained on how to perform minor and major edits on Wikipedia. The session was moderated by Omorodion Okuonghae and Tesleemah Abdulkareem. Partners spotlighted: Agbelere Practical Oriented Club.
    • The 2nd Wiki Climate Campus Tour Nigeria Webinar was held on July 15th, 2023. Participants were trained in performing major and minor edits on Wikidata. The session was facilitated by Rhoda James and moderated by Omorodion Okuonghae. Partners spotlighted: Friends of Earth Nigeria.
    • The 3rd Wiki Climate Campus Tour Nigeria Webinar was held on July 22nd, 2023. Participants received training on uploading media files and licensing on Wikimedia Commons. The session was facilitated by Salako Olamilekan and moderated by Tesleemah Abdulkareem. Partners spotlighted: Smiles Africa International Youth Development Initiative and Africa Network for Environment & Economic Justice (ANEEJ)/The Green Club Unilorin and Connected Advocacy.

  • Roundtable discussions: As part of our strategies to increase climate education and help participants identify the need to participate in this campaign we hosted a series of roundtable discussions within the identified institutions below using this suggested panel discussion content notes to facilitate discussions at the different institutions involved.
    • On the 8th of July, 2023, Federal University, Kashere held a Roundtable discussion with Dr. Abdulrashid Sadeeq and Dr. Nazifi Sulaiman who are both climate experts. The university held her first physical training session on 2nd September, and her second on 6th September, 2023.
    • The University of Benin held a Roundtable discussion on July 20th, 2023, with climate experts like Melody Ifechi Enyinnaya (Project Officer, Waste Management -Environmental Rights Action), Hannah Akpan (Friends of Earth Nigeria/Environmental Rights Action), Ebuka Onuoha (Chairman, Edo State SDG Network) and Dr. Ekhorutomwen M-G (University of Benin) in attendance. On 8th July and 19th September 2023, the university held her first and second physical training sessions, respectively.
    • On the 15th of July, 2023, Summit University, Offa, held its Hybrid Panel Discussion. Representatives from the Nigerian Environmental Society, Kwara State Chapter, were in attendance. Dr Eric Alao, Dr Kayode Omowumi, Mr Kehinde Ogunyale, and Dr Mrs Mohammed Mutiat Olaitan were also in attendance as panels of the discussion. On 29th July and 18th August 2023, the university held her first and second physical training sessions, respectively. The university also hosted an online training session on 7th August 2023.
    • On 22nd of July, 2023, the University of Ibadan held its Roundtable discussion [Mrs. Adejumoke Olowookere (Founder, The Waste Museum), Tomoefe Jaho-kagbare (SDG Hub UI), Kehinde Aderogba (The Safe Space), and Baliqees Adebisi (Plogging Nigeria) all attended and participated as panels in the disussion] and first physical training session. The university also held another physical training session on 5th August 2023.
    • On 29th of July, 2023, the University of Ilorin held its Panel discussion [Dr. Fola Babalola (Associate Professor) Founder, Save Sahara, Busari Jamaldeen (Agbelere Club Unilorin), Hashim Ogunbiyi (Green Club Unilorin), and Oluwapelumi Aina (Moderator) all attended and participated as panels in the discussion] and first physical training session. The university also held another physical training session on 5th August 2023.
    • On 14th September 2023, the University of Port Harcourt held its Roundtable discussion Dr. Onyaqbodor Oghogho Peter and Dr. H. O. Asuzu-Samuel were in attendance as panels for the discussion. On 15th September and 20th September 2023, the university held her first and second physical training sessions, respectively.
