Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

Working on the harmonisation and structuration of events has been useful in securing new parterships and trainig facilitators. We have worked on the design of events including the use of the UCoC, the naming of a person responsible for applying our charter, and we have systematised the way each of our events look with eahc time a single event page proposed. See two exemples here :

We worked very close to other affiliates to adress the communicaton and financing of the events in various parts of the world,

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

Having very regular meetups and online session helps to knit a community together. It takes time and patience but pays in the long run even if there are only a few persons around. Regularity and systematic reporting help to have a view of what is going on. Communicating on our future activities has helped increase engagement, and documenting past events thoroughly has helped engage new institutional partnerships willing to organize gender gap events,

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

We have our own particular way of organizing events without collecting personal details, using exclusively the dashboard (and testing the new event metrics tool) and a project page, and on top of that every event is the object of a repéort on our newsfeed here https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projet:Les_sans_pagEs#Actualités. Each time we delagate the marketing of the event to the partnering institution to achieve outreach. This in turns allows us to build our community transversally : we have local groups who search and train new editors, but the main activities remains online on wikipedia. The coordination of ideas and people is achieved with the telegram group, the discussion page on wikipedia being used mainly for editorial purposes. We also teach newbies early on how to discuss things on Wikipedia to make sure they integrate the community fast and know where to find help. We also hold an annual convention which is pretty much appreciated by our members. In 2023 for the first time we had to refuse people because of the lack of funding rresources. This event is considered as a focal point during the year, bringing motivation and inspiration. We also hold weekly online meetups since 2020. This has allowed the african and haitian community to participate and be trained on many tech nical aspects on Wikipedia and Wikidata,

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

We publish our agenda here, and have designed a monthly recap that people can stick on their fridge or on their social network timeline. The montly recaps are twitted, tooted ect and made visible at the top of the project page, See here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Les_sans_pagEs/Calendriers.

5. Documentation of your impact. Please use the two spaces below to share files and links that help tell your story and impact. This can be documentation that shows your results through testimonies, videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, etc.) social media posts, dashboards, etc.

6. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree
G. Increased participants' feelings of belonging and connection to the movement. Strongly agree

7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Africa : Having more and more participants and groups from Africa is both motivating and challenging. Motivating insofar asa we learn other perspectives from them, are obliged to make our processes (exemple : creating daschboards, project pages and documenting expenses) more understandable. Among the challenges : 1- internet access in Africa is an impeding factor 2 - getting documentation on expenses is sometimes difficult as well as reliable banking information 3 - the wikipedia community does not value the bilinguism of African contributors and is not very pedagogical in its approach to new contributors. Once an article is speedily deleted, we find it hard to explain to newbies what exactly the problem was and spend too much time in having drafts reinstated for pedagogical reasons.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

  1. We found out that the African community is increasingly and energetically interested in launching LSP events- This has led to learning how to navigate with these communities from afar.
  2. More and more GLAM institutions are asking us to provide gender equality events and are constituting an independant source of revenue
  3. Les sans pagEs are increasingly under scrutiny of the wikipedian community who does not appreciate affiliates intervening even just for events organizing on wikipedia. This has incresed with the professionalisation of the association.
  4. we did a poll to which 56 participants responded. we learned that LSP contributors are in average 25 to 35 years old, have accounts 3 to 5 years old and are composed of 60 % of women and 10% non gender conforming people. Peaple are overwhelmingly satisfied and among the things they did not appreciate at all was the press articles in novembre 2023 about the project (mostly in far right newspapers) and the fact.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

  1. Following increasing envolvement from african communities we discovered that there is a great need for learning to understand what wikipedian mean by "sourcing". We will have to design pedagogical approach and time to mentor these new african communties in our project.
  2. We might lead in the future to put the documentation of our events on meta or on our website, but would be detrimental to transparency and outreach in our opinion. We might also require help from a lawyer and have to budget this supplementary cost as well as acquire more knowledge in that field. A diversity hub providing legal counselling for gender gap and diversity projects in the movement would be a must have.
  3. the poll made us realise our community does not mainly consist of newbies anymore but experimented contributors. With that comes the need to reflect on staying a friend
  4. we need to strenghten our accounting skills among board members strengthen our internal processes. We need to elaborate documentation on board onboarding.
  5. we need to strngthen a diversity of revenue streams and find more funding to support african and lgbt projects

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work. For instance, guides, training material, presentations, work processes, or any other material the team has created to document and transfer knowledge about your work and can be useful for others. Please share any specific resources that you are creating, adapting/contextualizing in ways that are unique to your context (i.e. training material).

Fundraising Fundraise outside the Wikimedia movement 25000 7000 This alas was our weekedt point this year. The level of harrassement experienced and the development of oprerational activities did not allow us to fill these objectives, although we increased our autonomy financilally by increasing our own revenue streams with GLAM intstitutions who pay for trainings, conferences and editathons focused a gender gap issues. accounting
Press coverage press article and interviews per year 6 31 Our press review is here https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projet:Les_sans_pagEs/Revue_de_presse#Revue_de_presse_2023

Some articles published by conservative media turned out to be toxic, especially around the support of WMFR to les sans pagEs. These articles emanating from far right journalists targeted our director namely. We are concerned about the fact that informations seemed to have leeked allowing such toxic targeting.

À Wikimédia France, les mauvais comptes font les bons amis, Paul Sugy, Le Figaro, 11/11/2023 https://www.lefigaro.fr/actualite-france/a-wikimedia-france-les-mauvais-comptes-font-les-bons-amis-20231111 Guerre d’édition, censure, militantisme… Wikipédia, une encyclopédie sous influence ?, Le Point, Erwan Seznec, 09/11/2023 https://www.lepoint.fr/societe/guerre-d-edition-censure-militantisme-wikipedia-une-encyclopedie-sous-influence-09-11-2023-2542506_23.php

Some targeted individuals like our director with false accusations. We are not equipped legally to intervene efficiently to protect our staff from such toxic interference, This though became less virulent as an entry was created about these journalist on the Obresvatoire des sources here :

17a. Which of the following factors most helped you to build capacities? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

17b. Which of the following factors hindered your ability to build capacities? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Lack of volunteer time to participate in capacity building/training

18. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your organizational capacity has grown, and areas where you require support?

Our organisation has been growing fast and we need to build more capacities at board management level. The learning curve for volunteers is steep and maintaining activities on Wikipedia and the sistrer projects while also assuming board responsibilites is high. The time devoted to board supporting has increased with the professionalisation of the association which brought more responsibility to board members and the growing number of board members from diverse regions which in turn brought more need for staff support. The professonalisation has also brought more challenges with the wikipedian community, and time needed to adress these issues has increased. Les sans pagEs would benefit from regular sessions with other affiliates to learn how to adress these issues.

19. Partnerships over the funding period.
