Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

We proposed an in-person event as our celebration of the 15th year of Bikol Wikipedia so that it could reach wider audience and it would spur the interest of anyone who would hear about our activities. Thru the 3-day Bikol WikiConference, 2-month long Bikol Wiki Weekend weekly radio program and community conversations, the Bikol Wikipedia project was brought closer to its readers and stakeholders.

The activities stimulated discussions on the free and open knowledge, and created opportunities for collaborations including invitations and engagements with partners and individuals. The conference served as a venue for raising awareness and correcting misconceptions around Wikipedia among teachers and students, while the weekly radio program and community conversations deepened the understanding of the general public on various topics around different Wikimedia project and the movement.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Some of the strategies that helped in sustaining the interest of individuals involved in the activities were: doing follow-ups, sustaining conversations thru different channels with the participants and partners, welcoming invitations and encouraging partnership with institutions and organizations involved in the activities, and inviting them to participate in on-going initiatives and projects as well as in community conversations wherein they can provide their insights to anything relevant to our movement.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

The participants were inclined to building the local knowledge which they found relevant to their students and for this reason most of their outputs were aligned with our goals to bridge knowledge gaps. The target audience of the activities were from underrepresented groups such as teachers who may be familiar with Wikipedia as readers but not a contributors however encouraging them to be active remain a challenge because they are preoccupied in teaching and doing school related tasks while the goal of the radio program is mainly to spark interest and encourage the guests to be engaged in the activities of the community. Community conversations built confidence and a sense of belonginess among new contributors.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture showed the commitment of building a university-based community. It launched its own Wiki Education program becoming the first academic institution in the country to ever come up with its own program:

"The CBSUA Wiki Education envisions a university where faculty, non-teaching personnel, and students actively share knowledge with the general public by integrating Wikimedia into their instruction, research, extension, and production services. This innovative initiative will be managed by the CBSUA Wiki Club, consisting of faculty, non-teaching personnel, students, and alumni."

"The program's inaugural activities, announced during the launch, include a series of edit-a-thons. These edit-a-thons aim to attract and develop 60 new volunteer editors, integrate them into the CBSUA Wiki Club, and produce 500 new or revised content from October 25, 2023, to June 21, 2024. These edit-a-thons will take the form of a writing contest, and the winning editors will receive prizes courtesy of the Bikol Wikipedia Community."

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We hope that more Wikimedia communities will be launched through partnership with educational institutions and organizations in coming days in the Philippines.

Building partnership is building trust. Likewise, building partnership takes a lot of effort and time. During the culminating program last October 31, 2023, six (6) institutional partners were recognized by Bikol Wikipedia Community and Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group for their significant contribution and outstanding support, namely:

Sumaro Bikolnon (since 2009) Ateneo de Naga University (since 2012) University of Nueva Caceres (since 2013) Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement (since 2015) Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (since 2017) Raul S. Roco Library (since 2018)

We hoped that the readership and contributors on Bikol Wikipedia will increase dramatically thru these activities (namely the conference for teachers, radio program and awarding of recognition), and that the articles on the local knowledge increase both in quantity and quality.

Specifically, we aimed to reach 2.5 million (Result - Sep 2023: 1,902,292 views; Oct 2023: 2,196,148 views which is the 2nd highest ever!); that the figure increase from 38 to 50 active users in Sep 2023 (Result - Sep 2023: 61 editors; Oct 2023: 63 editors); and that we increase from nine (9) to 20 active editors (Result - Sep 2023: 13 editors; Oct 2023: 15 editors).

We also aimed that the Wikipedia:1,000 core topics be 100% completed (done!) based on the inputs of the conference participants, with 50% or 500 Start-class to Class B articles (Result: 264 Stubs, 555 Start, 166 C, and only 17 B Class), and that we encourage 20 additional community members by the end of September 2023 (Result: Oct 2023: 5).
