Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The focus of the Article Contest was to enhance the quality of existing articles on Bangla Wikipedia and at the same time recruiting new volunteers. The proposed activities and strategies were successfully implemented, resulting in significant improvements to the content and engagement within the community.

Implemented Activities and Strategies:

Comprehensive Article List: Prior to the contest, a dedicated team of experienced Wikipedians prepared an extensive article list. Throughout the event, this list was continually expanded to cater to evolving needs and ensure a wide range of topics were covered.

Preparations and Capacity Building: To ensure the smooth running of the contest, reviewers and organizers were on-boarded before its commencement. Regular group conversations were organized to enhance the reviewers' capabilities and address any critical issues that arose. We also conduct bi-weekly Open Community Call to get in touch directly with participants.

Prize Giving Ceremony and Meetup: Following the contest, a grand prize giving ceremony was arranged to recognize the achievements of the contestants and reviewers. Prizes were awarded to the winners and reviewers of the contest in appreciation of their contributions. Moreover, a subsequent meetup was organized, attended by mentors, administrators, and regional community leads. This gathering provided an opportunity to foster connections, share experiences, and strengthen the sense of community among all participants.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

1. Curated Article List: The preparation of an article list of around 500 articles by experienced Wikipedians before the contest was instrumental in guiding participants' contributions. This approach ensured that contestants focused their efforts on articles that required improvement, enhancing the overall quality of Bangla Wikipedia.

2. Proactive Review and Engagement: Engaging reviewers and organizers before the contest began allowed us to establish a proactive system for addressing critical issues. Regular group conversations were held to enrich the reviewers' capacity and ensure they were well-equipped to guide participants effectively. By addressing issues promptly, such as the inclusion of references in a translated article, we were able to maintain quality standards and encourage active participation.

3. Prize Giving Ceremony and Meetup: The organization of a prize giving ceremony followed by a meetup proved to be an effective strategy for celebrating the achievements of participants and creating a sense of community. Recognizing and rewarding the efforts of contestants and reviewers not only motivated them but also reinforced their commitment to Bangla Wikipedia. Over 30 Wikipedians from across the country attended the prize giving ceremony and meetup. The meetup provided an opportunity for networking, knowledge sharing, and further collaboration, strengthening the community and attracting new volunteers.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

We are able to enrich our understanding the behaviors and expectations of new Wikipedians. We are also able to evaluate the impact of initiatives and make data-driven decisions for future improvements.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

We established a dedicated Telegram group for participants, and to our delight, the group has attracted nearly double the number of members compared to the Bangla Wikipedia Telegram group. This had a positive impact on the participants' experience as they find it convenient and comfortable to seek assistance and engage in discussions within this group.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

1. To better align with our goal of recruiting new users, we recognized that improving existing articles might not be the most convenient approach for newcomers. Consequently, we have made the decision to shift the focus of the contest in the future towards creating and translating new articles. By emphasizing the creation of fresh content, we aim to lower the barriers to entry and attract a larger pool of new users to actively contribute to Bangla Wikipedia.

2. This year, we faced some challenges that impacted the participation and article submissions. Despite our thorough preparation, there were delays in the approval of grants, which had a direct impact on the overall execution of the contest. Consequently, we encountered fewer participants and, subsequently, a reduced number of submitted articles. The delay in declaring prizes for the winners and the inability to run a paid social media campaign, due to the grant approval delay, likely affected the overall results of the contest.

To address these issues and ensure smoother operations in the future, we recognize the importance of submitting grant requests well in advance. By allowing ample time for the approval process, we can mitigate any potential delays that could hinder the successful implementation of the contest.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
