Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

For Centre A’s 2023 Art and Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, we once again partnered up with the Helen and Morris Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia. Our proposed activities included two introductory workshops held by the Belkin Art Gallery, including an introduction to editing and a citation workshop that allowed us to not only engage and train new editors, we also saw a return of participants from last year who wanted a refresher on the materials. Centre A’s current exhibition, Ominous Chaos, greatly informed our focus on forgotten and misrepresented Iranian artists and our two workshops that Centre A hosted during the month of March, including Collective Investigation and our Independent Research Workshop.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

As we continue to our ongoing partnership with the Belkin Art Gallery Art in our third iterations of Art and Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, we have created a very effective systems where participants were able to have hands on training during the first introductory workshop and citation workshops and Belkin’s Edit-a-thon occurred prior to attending Centre A’s events and workshops that acted as a continuation of the series of Art and Feminism events throughout the course of usually two months. For Centre A, we have been hosting events that engage participants in different fields and events that can activate our reading room in different ways. By hosting different types of workshops and events every year, we are engaging with Art and Feminism’s goal to produce open-access research and enable inter-community solidarity through a sharing of knowledge.

For this year, we also focused our marketing and communications efforts predominantly through our social media account (with paid advertisements for each event) and our newsletter. We noticed a significant increase in engagements with our posts, particularly on our Instagram page that reaches beyond our followers. During the events, we asked participants (in different age ranges) how they heard about our events and we noticed that it was predominantly through our Instagram. We also noticed that we had an increase in attendees that were not in the arts.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Our learning priorities consisted of how Centre A could invite diverse communities to meaningfully participate in our programming, and whether our workshops could contribute to lowering entry barriers for new editors. We found that communities are more willing to engage with us when we have a better integration of our exhibitions and programs, and that having workshops on accessing different kinds of resources effectively introduces newcomers to editing. This year’s Art and Feminism events, focusing on the women’s movement in Iran, were designed to lead up to an exhibition featuring two Iranian Canadian women artists. Over the course of several weeks, we were able to streamline our promotions and attract a wider audience who were broadly interested in the topic. This synergy between our exhibition and programming further allowed for a more fulfilling learning experience for our visitors who could approach the topic from multiple angles. Our in-person event, a Collective Investigation of our library collection, dovetailed nicely with our online workshop on independent research. While the workshop allowed for a more in-depth and intimate discussion through engagement with a physical archive, the well-attended online event introduced the audience to a broad array of digital resources, with special focus on materials related to feminism in Iran. This complementary set of workshops equipped new editors with research skills and prepared them well for the edit-a-thon.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Here are some of the unexpected factors that came up: Lack of research materials focused on Iranian artists - As previously mentioned, our Art and Feminism events this year focused on creating new articles and updating existing articles on Iranian artists. Throughout the two months, as we are trying to find reputable sources to create new articles, we realise that even within our own library, there is a significant gap in available resources and materials for the Iranian contemporary artists. As a result, we were not able to create as many new pages as we had originally anticipated in our grant application.

Scheduling Conflicts - Due to unforeseen circumstances that affected our organisational capacity, this year we were unable to schedule our own edit-a-thon closer in time to Belkin’s edit-a-thon.

Logistics - During our edit-a-thon this year, we experienced a few minor hiccups in terms of logistics, such as participants having to click through a number of links to get to our outreach dashboard and Meetup page

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

Going forward, learning from this year’s events, we will continue to host Art and Feminism events focused on a contemporary topic that is further addressed through our exhibitions, and to use a combination of in-person and online events to introduce visitors to a variety of resources. For our online workshops, we will expand promotional efforts to attract non-local audiences. We also managed to involve a number of new and returning volunteers for our in-person workshop and edit-a-thon, which is something we hope to continue doing. Referring to the previous questions about unexpected factors that came up: Lack of research materials: After talking to our team and our grant officer, Chris, we decided to use our remaining grant money to purchase new materials on historical and contemporary perspectives of Iranian art as well as other literature to include in our reading room. Scheduling Conflicts - We will also continue to collaborate with Belkin Art Gallery or possibly expand to include other community partners to draw in targeted audiences. In the future we aim to plan earlier to hold the two events consecutively to facilitate more sustained engagement and to help editors maintain momentum in their work. Logistics - The logistics problem with the links could be easily solved in the future by taking time in advance to create a QR code or a master page.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
