Part 1: Project and impact

[edit]

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

As outlined in our April 2024 - September 2024 activity plan, we implemented a series of activities during this period. These include regular workshops, conversation hours, and establishment and sustainability of Wiki Clubs.

Conversation Hours

[edit]

During the period, we successfully hosted six editions of the DCW Conversation Hour, focusing one a wide range of impactful topics such as Partnership Dynamics: Ethical Collaboration Strategies, Wikimedia Ecosystem: Targeted Strategies, Movement Charter: Impact and Implications, Exploring Community Wishlist, Elevate with Evaluation and Impactful Communication Strategies. We have also produced recordings of these hours for wider public benefit. Our guests included Praveen Das, Lead Partnerships Manager, South Asia, Wikimedia Foundation; Jake Orlowitz, Founder, The Wikipedia Library & Wiki Blueprint; Manavpreet Kaur, Member, Movement Charter Drafting Committee; Runa Bhattacharjee, Senior Director of Product - Languages and Content Growth, Wikimedia Foundation; Jessica Stephenson, Lead Learning and Evaluation Officer at the Wikimedia Foundation; and Rachit Sharma, Senior Global Movement Communications Specialist, South Asia, Wikimedia Foundation. To promote our interest in supporting the student community, we have had several students host these important conversations.

Wiki Clubs

[edit]

After having established Wiki Club Jamia in October 2023, we have supported the club in restructuring itself according to its needs. From helping the club organise Wikimedia Primer: Your First Wikipedia Article, to supporting it collaborate with CIS-A2K through the She Leads program to help develop and sustain female leadership. In September 2024, we helped the club bring its Core Organise Team at one table to discuss its priorities for the next year. The meet-up was attended by 17 people, including students and alumni of the Jamia Millia Islamia.

On 31 May 2024, we supported the establishment of Wiki Club AMU, a unique club in the entire Wikimedia ecosystem led by female students. Throughout the course, we supported the club in organising several workshops and set its priorities. The story of Wiki Club, co-authored by one of its COT members, is available on Wikimedia Diff as Sharing the Wiki Club AMU story!. Later on 2 July 2024, we established the Wiki Club Deoband to engage students and alumni from the Darul Uloom Deoband in our movement. The club has also organised some events, however, still in probation. We are supporting the club with activities listed in our current activity plan.

Workshops and other meetups

[edit]

From 1 April to 15 October (grant period), we organised a series of impactful workshops and meetups. We initiated the Koshur Collective, together with Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group, to revitalize Kashmiri language. These workshops and events include:

Edit-a-thons

[edit]

We conducted the second edition of DCW-K Editathon from 11 June to 25 June, helping contribute 79 articles on Kashmiri Wikimedia. Similarly, the 2024 drive of Deoband Yoruba Collaborative Project, helped collectively contribute over 94 articles on Urdu and Yoruba language Wikipedias.

2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)

Share links to:

  • Project page on Meta-Wiki or any other Wikimedia project
  • Dashboards and tools that you used to track contributions
  • Some photos or videos from your event. Remember to share access.

You can also share links to:

Our 2024 activity report gives an overview of activities carried out throughout the year of 2024 including those supported by this grant program from 1 April 2024 to 15 October, 2024. This program helped further streamline the DCW Conversation Hour by enabling us to record and share the conversation hour videos to make a wider impact. The relevant recordings are:

Through our different initiatives, our efforts have resulted in addressing the relevant knowledge gaps across several Wikimedia projects. Some of the content created/improved includes:

A mosque in Sopore, Kashmir

Our volunteers have brought a variety of free media on Wikimedia Commons, both individually as well as through the Heritage Lens Fellowship. The August 2024 iteration, brought over 109 images.

Wiki Club AMU’s August 2024 COT Meetup

Motivated by our strategic trajectory and the term's activity plan, our major impact has been through sustaining three different Wiki Clubs, most notably the Wiki Club AMU, which not only connects students with the community, but also addresses gender-gap differently.

Additionally, share the materials and resources that you used in the implementation of your project. (required)

For example:

  • Training materials and guides
  • Presentations and slides
  • Work processes and plans
  • Any other materials your team has created or adapted and can be shared with others

Our shift to MediaWiki on our website, and utilising the Wikimedia skin developed by Wikimedia Australia has benefited us in several ways, and made a lot of our tasks go easier. Our access to Zoom-premium had made it very easey to record our conversation hours and several of our online workshops for wider benefits. From generic resources, we have utilised Movement Strategy Recommendations such as Invest in Skills and Leadership Development and Evaluate, Iterate, and Adapt to guide our work throughout the period. Our major resource has been our own strategic guideline. Inspired by Wikimedia Australia’s Drop-in and Wiki, we curated Mehfil-e-Wiki, to sustain our communities.

3. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with this Rapid Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals. Required. Select one option per question. (required)

Part 2: Learning

[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: We hope to gain insights about diversity of content and information pertaining to DCW's theme. This will be achieved through the active involvement of passionate young volunteers and students. Our focus is on discovering ways to enhance our support for them, enabling the continuation of their efforts in advancing Wikimedia's goals. We also aspire to contribute to the documentation of knowledge related to global Muslim academia.

"Evaluate, Iterate and Adapt" has been our core principle throughout our activities, and whilst executing this plan alongside implementing learnings from our Leadership Development and Skills Infrastructure Plan, we have come across several new learnings. These learnings are usually surrounding our three major programs, the DCW Conversation Hour, the Heritage Lens, and the Wiki Clubs that we support. In order to help invest in leadership and capacity development, we learned that it was necessary to engage students associated with our Wiki Clubs to lead conversations, which could also help them academically. We have announced calls to engage more students in hosting our DCW Conversation Hour. Through the Heritage Lens, we have learned more about the on-ground requirements, as reported by our fellows. Our major learnings with Wiki Clubs have been organised in our Sustainability Guide for Wiki Clubs. Our subsequent learnings are incorporated into our October 2024 - March 2025 activity plan as usual.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

We did not come across any unusual situations during this period. Sustainable growth of Wiki Club AMU, our representation at the Wikimedia Summit 2024, participation of our volunteers at Wikimedia Technology Summit 2024 and Train The Trainer 2024, surprised us the most. It was for the first time that two of our volunteers received a full scholarship for participating in a TTT. We have learned from these experiences that we need to continue offering one-on-one peer-support, and continue fostering our capacity development initiatives, for the growth of the volunteer community.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We have used event spaces such as Wikimedia Summit 2024, Wikimedia Technology Summit 2024, Train The Trainer 2024, and a series of our own events, to share our learnings with the wider community. Taking inspiration from Wikimedia Australia, we introduced Mehfil-e-Wiki, allowing us to share our learnings more openly with our community members. Meanwhile, as we remain guided by our principles of Evaluation, Iteration, and Adaptation, we have already incorporated these learnings into our activities. In August 2024, we also contributed virtually to a panel discussion at Wikimania 2024 exploring the role of Wiki clubs, and how universities could be connected with the movement. Our activity plan for October 2024 - March 2025 is based on these learnings.

Part 3: Metrics
