Part 1: Project and impact

Activity Implementation: Workshops The workshops about LinguaLibre and how to use it for recording Puno quechua voices were organized in coordination with 3 institutions and organizations in the Puno region. The first, we organized a workshop together with the Systems Engineering faculty of the National university of the Altiplano of Puno, where we reached out a full auditorium. About 120 university students attended the workshop and learned about LinguaLibre and the importance of recording the voices of their mother tongues. The second, we organized a workshop in the Nuñoa town, in Puno. where we made several calls at the radio stations announcing about the LinguaLibre workshop. The event reached about 12 persons. Additionally, we were invited to talk also about LinguaLibre and Wikipedia in the radio of Nuñoa during the “Rondas Campesinas” session, which has the highest pick of audience in the town. The third, we organized a workshop together with the “Illariy Ch’aska” organization, which is located 5 km from the Nuñoa town. The workshop reached 8 participants who were truly quechua speakers, and most of the concepts were explained in Quechua language.
Activity Implementation: Recording sessions In recording session were challenging and quite diverse. We had 9 participants who were willing to record their voices using LinguaLibre tool and with our support. The main challenge was to adjust our schedule according to their free time. For instance, most of the participants were living in the mountains and were often free at very early times or very late in the evenings. Also, we had to adjust our transport, a motorbike, and reach them in their houses at the mountains.
Most of the participants in the recording sessions, resulted from the third workshop. Somehow, they felt connected with our objectives to save the Puno Quechua language, and they feel confident to speak and listen during our live workshop in Quechua. We were supporting them with the LinguaLibre workflow and they feel thankful afterwords. Furthermore, one thing that we always bring with us to connect with them was food, they could be fine getting the reward pack, but they were even happier to receive food and share it with their relatives.

Part 2: Learning

You can recall these learning questions below: The approach we are proposing is certainly new to the Quechua Community, yet it takes advantage of the Wikimedia ecosystems and its tools. We have designed an approach that first, collects all quechua vocabularies on a Wikibase instance, then we select a specific quechua variant (e.g., Quechua Puneño), afterwards, we create lists of words to be recorder by quechua native speakers. Finally, the recordings are loaded ad presented on Wikimedia Commons. Some learning points are:
- How this approach can be used for recording other quechua language variants
- How this approach can help low-resource languages to overcome their lack of resources
- How a community of quechua speaker can be empowered with tools so they can continue contributing to the Wikimedia ecosystem
- How the recording can be used for creating Open Educational Resources
The approach we proposed was certainly new to the Quechua Community, because before our project there were just 20 lexemes on Wikidata and no speech recordings. So, what we did was to take advantage of the Wikimedia ecosystems and its tools to record voices of an under resourced language as is the Puno Quechua. There is a workflow that we designed and followed in order to achieve our goal for the Puno Quechua language, which currently has about 1000 lexemes on Wikidata, and they have their speech recordings. It can be used on a different under resourced language by following: First, collects vocabularies and dictionaries and curate them on a Wikibase instance Then, import the curated list of words into Wikidata. Afterwords, generate a SPARQL query to select a list of words that you want to record. Then, open the LinguaLibre tool and import the list of words based on your SPARQL query. Afterwards, speakers of your language can record their voices. Last but not least, the recordings are loaded ad presented on Wikimedia Commons. Finally, the recording are added on the created lexemes on Wikidata. The recording are available on Wikimedia Commons and can be downloaded by anyone. They can be included on Quechua Wikipedia articles, can be used for quechua learners to listen the words, and more.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Perhaps the most important lesson of this project is to try to connect with people, and not only try to get the task done. One main challenge for us was to adapt to the participant's schedule time, so they can still work on their things during the day, and we can visit them on their free time. Also, the fact that we need to visit them in the mountains because they do not live in the town.
The other thing is that, people living in the town they do not (want to) speak quechua anymore, and they are not interested on saving the language. So mostly people from the mountains try to push their language forward. I hope this changes in the future.
