Part 1 Understanding your work

[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The proposed activities and strategies were implemented through a coordinated effort involving various stakeholders. We began by organizing three events, two offline and one online, aimed at raising awareness about Kolami Wikipedia and training participants on Wikimedia platforms. These events were conducted at key locations within the Kolami-speaking community, ensuring maximum outreach.

Simultaneously, essential resources were translated into Kolami, including Wikipedia guidelines and typing tutorials, to facilitate the training sessions and empower potential Kolami Wikipedia editors.

To enrich Kolami Wikipedia with relevant content, images, and videos depicting Kolam culture, including festivals like Bhimayyak and Akadi, were collected and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. A photo walk is organized in Northern Telangana, covering various important places. The team has uploaded media related to indigenous cultures representing Gondi, Kolami, Thoti, Andh, etc., tribes, with a special emphasis on the Komaram Bheem Tribal Museum and Nagoba Temple. Efforts were made to create 200 articles covering grammar, language, and culture, with the support of local writers and youth.

Partnerships with Utnoor Sahiti Vedika, ITDA Utnoor, and other organizations were formalized to strengthen collaboration and garner community support.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Several strategies and approaches proved effective in achieving our goals:

1. Community Engagement: Engaging with the Kolami community directly through offline events and partnerships with local organizations helped foster collaboration.

2. Capacity Building: Providing training sessions and translating essential resources into Kolami empowered community members to contribute to Kolami Wikipedia.

3. Cultural Documentation: Collecting images and videos of Kolam culture, including festivals and traditional practices, enriched Kolami Wikipedia with diverse and culturally relevant content. By showcasing the richness of the Indigenous cultures of Northern Telangana, we attracted more interest and engagement from both community members and external stakeholders.

4. Partnership Development: Forming partnerships with Utnoor Sahiti Vedika, ITDA Utnoor and other organizations working in the Kolami-speaking region enhanced our project's reach and impact. Leveraging existing networks and expertise allowed us to tap into local knowledge and resources effectively.

Overall, these strategies focused on community empowerment, capacity building, cross-cultural collaboration, content enrichment, and partnership development were instrumental in achieving our goals of promoting and developing content in the Kolami language on Wikimedia platforms.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

Our Inclusive approach made us accommodate Gondi Wikimedians and we also had cultural representation from Gondi, Thoti, Kolami, Andh, Nayakpod, and Pradhan Tribes of Telangana.

Part 2: Your main learning

[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

During this period, we learned:

1. Blended Community Discussions: Combining online and offline engagement effectively mobilizes volunteers for Kolami Wikipedia.

2. Translation Toolkit Utilization: Translating essential resources into Kolami empowers new editors, facilitating their contribution.

3. Pooling Like-Minded Individuals: Partnering with organizations amplifies resources and networks, advancing language conservation efforts.

4. Model Project Replication: Documenting experiences helps create a blueprint for similar projects in other Indian language Wikipedias.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

After completing the offline events, the team had a chance to organize a photo walk, through which we explored various places of importance representing the indigenous heritage of Telangana. We also gathered images of the photo walk.

This experience was enriching and helped us to contribute in a better way to Wikimedia.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
