Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The devised strategies to address the Content Gender Gap and enhance Community Engagement were implemented with utmost dedication and precision. To tackle the issue of underrepresentation of notable women on Wiki projects, we orchestrated a series of in-person editathons and workshops with a specialized focus on content pertaining to women on Wikipedia and Wikidata. To ensure the availability of comprehensive and credible information, a diligent curation team of five members was established, diligently researching and sourcing relevant references for our volunteers during these editathons.

Over the course of the project, a total of 12 editathons were successfully conducted, each dedicated to specific themes to amplify the visibility of underrepresented genders. This approach not only sought to redress the systemic bias within the movement but also served as a catalyst to stimulate active participation among volunteers. In parallel, our strategy of periodic meetups with community members and editors played a pivotal role in sustaining enthusiasm and commitment. These face-to-face interactions provided an avenue for open and constructive discussions, allowing participants to express their thoughts and provide valuable feedback. As a result, we were able to address concerns promptly and make necessary enhancements based on insights gleaned from the community.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Among the strategies employed, the in-person editathons and workshops proved to be highly effective in accomplishing our objectives. These gatherings instilled a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose, significantly augmenting community engagement. Focused themes and topics allowed participants to delve deep into specific areas of interest, resulting in heightened levels of involvement and dedication. Furthermore, the dedicated efforts of the curation team in providing well-researched materials expedited and enriched the editing process.

The periodic meetups played a pivotal role in sustaining the vigor and enthusiasm of the community. By fostering regular face-to-face interactions, we cultivated a more cohesive and collaborative environment, wherein participants felt valued, and their perspectives were duly acknowledged. This approach engendered transparency, inclusivity, and collective ownership of the project.

The outcomes of our concerted efforts were reflected in the increased participation of new contributors driven to address the Content Gender Gap on Wikipedia and Wikidata. The in-person editathons and workshops served as inclusive platforms, encouraging active involvement from underrepresented groups, particularly women, in the creation and enhancement of content.

Our concerted focus on prioritizing articles and items related to underrepresented genders yielded tangible results, with a noteworthy surge in notable women being represented on these platforms. The creation and improvement of over 1500 articles/items, with a significant majority linked to women, exemplified our commitment to rectifying historical imbalances and fostering inclusivity.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Throughout this period, our journey has been filled with valuable discoveries and heartwarming experiences as we worked towards our learning priorities. One of the most significant learnings was the power of inclusivity and the importance of reaching out to underrepresented communities. We were deeply moved by the impact of deliberately including women and individuals from diverse ethnic, racial, religious, and cultural backgrounds in our activities. Seeing them take on vital roles like organizing, facilitating, and participating was truly inspiring, and it reinforced our belief in the strength of diversity.

Engaging with our participants before and during the events was a wonderful experience. We discovered that personalized communication and the "tell a friend to tell a friend" approach created a sense of excitement and anticipation, driving their motivation to attend. Witnessing the enthusiasm of participants as they eagerly shared the movement with their friends and colleagues was a joy to behold.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

we faced unexpected challenges along the way. Despite our best efforts, there were certain regions where it proved challenging to achieve full representation. These barriers reminded us of the importance of building connections with local community leaders, forging partnerships that can help us break down geographical obstacles in the future.

What truly warmed our hearts were the moments of connection and dedication we witnessed from our participants. Their passion for contributing to knowledge sharing on Wikidata and Wikipedia was palpable, and we couldn't help but feel immense pride in the community we had nurtured. The one-on-one mentorship system played a pivotal role in retaining our participants, fostering close bonds, and ensuring their continuous engagement in Wikimedia activities.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

As we reflected on our experiences, we realized that effective training involved understanding each participant's unique learning style and needs. Flexibility and adaptability in our approaches allowed us to tailor our training methods, ensuring that each individual felt valued and supported on their journey to becoming active editors.
