Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The "My Ability in Disability Wikimedia Project" project successfully addressed the underrepresentation of individuals with physical disabilities in Wikimedia projects through a strategic series of activities. Awareness trips and distribution of informative materials significantly increased awareness within the target community, fostering interest and engagement. These efforts resulted in the identification and recruitment of fifty participants, primarily from the Deaf Association in the Northeast region, showcasing the effectiveness of on-the-ground community interactions.

Central to the project's success was the implementation of physical sessions, where participants were introduced to Wikimedia projects, guided through account creation, and received hands-on training to enhance their editing skills. These tailored training sessions, emphasizing one-on-one interactions, effectively addressed the unique needs of physically challenged individuals, ensuring their active participation and confidence in contributing to Wikimedia projects. The project's commitment to issue resolution, actively addressing challenges faced by participants during these sessions, contributed to a positive and supportive learning environment.

Moreover, the project's approach extended beyond the immediate activities, introducing participants to the Hausa Wikimedians User Group and providing ongoing support. This long-term engagement strategy fostered a sense of community and belonging within the Wikimedia movement, empowering participants to become active contributors beyond the project's duration. Key lessons learned included the importance of community engagement, tailored training, and ongoing support, while challenges were addressed promptly, ensuring a more inclusive and enriching experience for physically challenged individuals in Wikimedia projects.

In a notable development, the project laid the groundwork for the establishment of OKDI, a non-profit organization dedicated to the "My Ability in Disability" initiative. OKDI has been officially registered and is actively exploring potential partnerships, including an appliaction which is under review with the Coca-Cola Foundation. There are ongoing efforts to secure a generous international grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation, with plans to train an additional 400 youths with disabilities. This initiative is slated to commence from April to August, further extending the impact and reach of the project.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: Introduction - Building on Past Achievements:

Building on the achievements of my previous projects, I have realized that these initiatives have not only created awareness but have also resulted in significant outcomes. They have successfully recruited and trained editors, fostering the growth of a more active and engaged Wikimedia community. Moreover, beneficiaries of these projects have emerged as mentors and facilitators in various initiatives, and leading projects in their communities. These outcomes have served as valuable lessons for me.

Lessons for This Project:

In the context of this present project, I aim to build upon these lessons and achieve the following lessons :

1. Increase Active Editors with Disabilities: I aspire to witness more individuals with physical challenges becoming active editors on Wikimedia projects. By breaking down barriers and providing tailored support, we aim to empower these individuals to contribute actively and make their unique perspectives and knowledge available to a wider audience.

2. Enhance Disability-Related Content: Another objective is to see a significant increase in the creation and improvement of content related to disabilities on Wikimedia Projects. This expansion will contribute to a more comprehensive and inclusive representation of disability-related topics, making Wikimedia a valuable resource for diverse audiences.

3. Empower People with Disabilities as Facilitators: Beyond participation, I hope to learn how individuals with disabilities can take on facilitator roles in projects. Their firsthand experiences and insights can be incredibly influential in reaching and inspiring more people within their communities. Empowering them as facilitators has the potential to create a positive ripple effect.

4. Sharing Lessons Widely: Just as in my past projects, the lessons learned in this initiative will be made readily available to user groups, communities, and other stakeholders. Sharing these insights will enable others to benefit from the experiences, challenges, and successes of this project, fostering knowledge exchange and growth within the Wikimedia community.

In implementing the "My Ability in Disability Wikimedia Awareness" project, I sought to address key learning questions outlined in the initial application. Here are the insights gained from these learning questions and how I plan to use these learnings in the future:

1. Increase Active Editors with Disabilities:

  - Learning: The project successfully engaged individuals with physical challenges, breaking down barriers and providing tailored support to empower them to become active editors.
  - Future Application: This learning will inform future projects aimed at inclusivity within Wikimedia. I will continue to prioritize tailored support for individuals with disabilities, ensuring their active participation and contribution to Wikimedia projects.

2. Enhance Disability-Related Content:

  - Learning: The project resulted in a notable increase in the creation and improvement of content related to disabilities on Wikimedia Projects.
  - Future Application: Recognizing the impact of focused training sessions, future projects will continue to emphasize content creation related to disability topics. This approach contributes to a more comprehensive and inclusive representation within the Wikimedia ecosystem.

3. Empower People with Disabilities as Facilitators:

  - Learning: The initiative explored the empowerment of individuals with disabilities as facilitators, recognizing their firsthand experiences and insights as influential.
  - Future Application: Building on this learning, future projects will actively seek opportunities to empower individuals with disabilities to take on facilitator roles. Their unique perspectives can have a positive ripple effect, inspiring and reaching more people within their communities.

4. Sharing Lessons Widely:

  - Learning: The commitment to sharing lessons and insights with user groups, communities, and stakeholders has been a consistent practice.
  - Future Application: This commitment to knowledge exchange and growth within the Wikimedia community will continue. Lessons learned from the "My Ability in Disability" project will be documented and shared widely to benefit others, fostering a culture of shared experiences, challenges, and successes within the community.

In future projects, decisions will be guided by these learnings. The emphasis on tailored support, content creation, empowerment of individuals with disabilities, and widespread knowledge sharing will remain integral to fostering inclusivity and growth within the Wikimedia movement. Adaptations and expansions will be made based on the evolving needs and feedback from participants, ensuring a continuous commitment to creating an accessible and enriching environment for all contributors.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Due to the economic challenges faced by people with disabilities, many were unable to register for the physical sessions due to a lack of access to digital devices. Additionally, even those who possessed such devices were not actively participating. To address this issue, we initiated collaborations with the Joint Association of Persons with Disability in the target region. This involved facilitating the registration of participants without them needing to fill out online forms. Furthermore, to enhance their engagement, we provided sufficient data support.

Looking ahead, we are actively exploring partnerships with international organizations to upscale and empower participants. The aim is to offer them the necessary devices and establish a sustainable platform for their continued involvement. We extend our gratitude to the Wikimedia Foundation for their full support during the first edition of this initiative.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

By employing amulti-pronged approach, the project's learnings and results are being widely shared and accessible to the Wikimedia community, fostering knowledge exchange and contributing to the collective growth and development of inclusive initiatives within the movement.
