Part 1 Understanding your work

[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

Our activities recorded good success based on the strategies implemented which includes:

1. AWARENESS CREATION: We carried out a one-day physical awareness campaign (a week to commencement of the event) within the university premises and its environs. Our proposed meetings with Deans of the target faculties was a success and we got their approval to proceed with our event. Posters, fliers and event information were circulated/posted on all University online communication channels including Whatsapp and Telegram groups.
2. CURTAILING IP BLOCK: We consulted a Wikipedia event coordinator (user:Olugold) to create accounts for participants to reduce IP Blocks being that the new participants were up to 80 in number. This was done some days prior to the event.
3. HYBRID EDITATHON TRAININGS: We conducted a physical and online edit-a-thon trainings for participants on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikicommons respectively which spanned a period of two months. Online participation was for participants who could not participate physically.
4. USE OF EXPERIENCED WIKIMEDIANS: There were volunteer experienced editors at the event to assist new editors during the training.
5. TRAINING PARTICIPANTS IN GROUPS: We split participants into groups during the training to make training & learning process more efficient. We maintained Friendly Space and UCoC Policies.
6. USE OF RELEVANT TOOLS: We made us of Dashboard and XTool to track contributions during the event period and during the contest.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

All the strategies were very effective. But I feel the most effective strategies were:

1. CURTAILING IP BLOCK: We consulted a Wikipedia event coordinator (user:Olugold) to create accounts for participants to reduce IP Blocks being that the new participants were up to 80 in number. This was done some days prior to the event.
2. USE OF EXPERIENCED WIKIMEDIANS: There were volunteer experienced editors at the event to assist new editors during the training.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

As a lecturer and a member of the university community, awareness was created in the community which gave room for more participation. Participants were enlightened and contributed in their native language.

Part 2: Your main learning

[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

I learnt a lot during the course of this event.

The event exposed me to different individuals and their level of understanding Wikimedia projects. In the process I had to bring myself to their own level of understanding so as to make them understand what they were being taught.

I also learnt more about Wikimedia while creating awareness about the event because I read wider before carrying out the outreach, also responded to questions on Wikimedia from the staff and students of the University.

I learnt further that practice makes perfect as participants did not hesitate in following instructions to continue practicing what they were taught. This they displayed during the event contest.

I also learnt that more participants are more interested in contributing and learning more about wikipedia. This i attributed to fact that majority of the participants were students and academics who use wikipedia more in their academic projects.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

The high level of interest and the turn up of participants was not expected. Attendance exceeded our target and number we budgeted for. Our budget was for 100 participants but we had 141 participants at the event. We were only able to carter for the number budgeted for and encouraged others in hopes that future projects will be able to cater for more. Participants were quite understanding and appreciated the knowledge imparted. This experience exposed me to the level of interest members of the university community have on learning about the Wikimedia Movement, projects and their level of willingness to participate.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

With the level of willingness displayed by members of the university community in learning and participating, I will encourage my Wikimedia community for prioritize carrying out more wiki events and outreach at university communities (in future) being that it is a learning environment which constitutes intellectuals and academics.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
