Part 1: Project and impact

[edit]

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The project was successful, as it aided the student activities related to adding reliable sources to Wikipedia. The activity was held in two of my courses (Media Trends and Globalization as an obligatory activity and Understanding Small and Big Data with Wikis as an extra credit activity). The Dashboard tool lists approximately 6k references added during my courses, although that number refers to the outcome of all activities related to wiki editing in my courses, not just the ones enabled by the grant. I estimate that ~10% of the references added in my courses were aided by the grant materials (printed media). In addition, students engaged in valuable discussions about reliability of media, which is particularly important considering the high number of exchange students from Mainland China. For many of them this was their first exposure to printed Western media; and they benefited from comparison of reliable media to Chinese media, some of which is banned from Wikipedia (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Perennial_sources)

2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)

Students also used the media at other times, but not all activities were photographed.

Part 2: Learning

[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: As I have an established record of publishing articles about using Wikipedia in the classroom, I would like to write up a how-to article for teachers describing the use of reliable newspapers and magazines as sources for student writing activities. See my most recent publication: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/87567555.2023.2182756 "Quick Fix: Making Writing Assignment Motivational with Wikipedia" . The write-up will first be released in a form of a guide for the Wikimedia Community in early 2025, with possible future rewrite into an academic paper.

I cannot locate “learning questions” in the application. I will paste in the content of a related section and my updated comments on this: 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required) As I have an established record of publishing articles about using Wikipedia in the classroom, I would like to write up a how-to article for teachers describing the use of reliable newspapers and magazines as sources for student writing activities.

-- As stated, I intend to write up guides about my activities. There will be separate guides on wiki and in academic press. Early version of the wiki guides is being written up here: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/User:Hanyangprofessor2 https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Hanyangprofessor2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Hanyangprofessor2#Globalization

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

I learned that it is difficult to locate student edits from the particular activities (here, grant-related media workshops from October 4 and December 2). In the next iteration of the class, I plan to have students report their edits (through the “DIFF” tool) to a dedicated page that can then be used to enhance metrics.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

See above

Part 3: Metrics

[edit]

7. Wikimedia Metrics results. (required)

In your application, you set some Wikimedia targets in numbers (Wikimedia metrics). In this section, you will describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used.

Target Results Comments and tools used
Number of participants 150 75 I estimated 150 participants which are the same as editors for my classes. I estimated that number based on the grant durationof 3 years. The grant and project were later revised to 1 year. Due to a mismatch between grant schedule and university semesters, the activity took place in only one semester (the second will start in March). According to Dashboard metrics, the class were this activity was primary had 75 students, the class were it was used as an extra activity, 45. As such, the number of participant is above the expected level (which would be ~50 per year).

8. Other Metrics results.

In your proposal, you could also set Other Metrics targets. Please describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used if you set Other Metrics in your application.

Other Metrics name Metrics Description Target Result Tools and comments

9. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? (required)

No

9.1. Please state what difficulties you had. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

Part 4: Financial reporting

[edit]

10. Please state the total amount spent in your local currency. (required)

6427.2

11. Please state the total amount spent in US dollars. (required)

1612.15

12. Report the funds spent in the currency of your fund. (required)

Provide the link to the financial report The following is based on budget calculations at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UhRNmaYp5drCNw_YSHfuoy60A-srnSxcCbbUy5GNDog/edit?gid=928458698#gid=928458698

12.2. If you have not already done so in your financial spending report, please provide information on changes in the budget in relation to your original proposal. (optional)

It seems I overestimated the cost of the project; there are significant leftover funds (approximately half of the funds were spend, $1,612.15 out of $3,563.00 received)

13. Do you have any unspent funds from the Fund?

Yes

13.1. Please list the amount and currency you did not use and explain why.

See above. I initially intended to get more media, but decided that we don’t need that much. I believe my revised decision was correct.

13.2. What are you planning to do with the underspent funds?

B. Propose to use them to partially or fully fund a new/future request with PO approval

13.3. Please provide details of hope to spend these funds.

N/A

14.1. Are you in compliance with the terms outlined in the fund agreement?

Yes

14.2. Are you in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations as outlined in the grant agreement?

Yes

14.3. Are you in compliance with provisions of the United States Internal Revenue Code (“Code”), and with relevant tax laws and regulations restricting the use of the Funds as outlined in the grant agreement? In summary, this is to confirm that the funds were used in alignment with the WMF mission and for charitable/nonprofit/educational purposes.

Yes

15. If you have additional recommendations or reflections that don’t fit into the above sections, please write them here. (optional)

It would be good to have an option to auto-renew the grant until the funds run out due to renewed subscriptions. I do not require any more funds, the current funds should be sufficient to operate the project over the next few years, as initially planned.
