Part 1: Project and impact

[edit]

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

This year, during Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Ghana, we were excited to welcome a new group from the Wikimedia community, the Tamale Wiki hub, located in the Northern Region of Ghana. They contributed images showcasing natural scenery from protected areas in the Northern Region and Bono Region. Additionally, some new participants uploaded their photos independently, without attending any of our organized photowalks. Throughout May to July, several new contributors utilized the WLE banner that was actively displayed. In all we had 68 participants contributing 1,727 total number of photos and videos with some being used in other wikis.

2. Documentation of your impact. Please use space below to share links that help tell your story, impact, and evaluation. (required)

Part 2: Learning

[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: Southern Sector: To learn more of new participants' involvement, to see how they can effectively contribute to Commons.

Northern Sector: We want to learn more about how Ghana's northern natural heritage may be showcased and amplified globally, hence elevating our significance, through learning from Africa's natural environments. We hope to gain knowledge on how the northern Ghanaian heritage sites can have a beneficial social impact and foster knowledge sharing in an open space under a free license.

Southern Sector: We had new professional photographers joining in our photowalks for the southern sector, which has resulted in the quality or the enhancements in the photos we uploaded. In future, we like to retain these new photographers and encourage them to contribute more.

Northern Sector: The change we were trying to bring is centered around showcasing amazing, openly licensed photos of northern Ghana's landscapes and historical sites. To increase awareness of the cultural and natural significance of the region, these photos were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, where users may use them for free and incorporate them into Wikipedia articles. To achieve this objective in this year's Wiki Loves Earth campaign, we organized training, gifts for hard-working participants, photo walks, capturing images of natural heritage, and uploading them to Wikimedia Commons. At the end of the contest, we had a total of 491 images and videos uploaded, improved Wikipedia articles, and engaged with the community.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Southern Sector: During Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Ghana, extreme weather conditions prevented us from carrying out some of our planned photowalks. Even on the photowalks that we did complete, we were caught in rainstorms, including one on the tallest mountain in Ghana. In the future, we plan to provide participants with protective gear to ensure that no one is injured during such conditions.

Northern Sector: We anticipated some challenges in encouraging participants to consistently contribute to Wikimedia projects, but the enthusiastic response exceeded expectations. Many showed a high level of commitment to Wikimedia Commons training and actively engaged in editing sessions, indicating a strong interest in content creation. This taught us that clear guidance and accessible training can significantly enhance participation. Also, during our Wiki Loves Earth Campaign, inconsistent internet connectivity hindered our online sessions, early uploading of pictures and videos, and other editing activities. This issue taught us to plan for technical contingencies and include offline activities as a backup when internet access is limited.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

We planned our project learnings with other community members through planned events, community mailing list and Telegram or WhatsApp groups.
