Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The implemented activities were trainings and edit-a-thons, online and in-persons. We were able to conduct trainings to sign language interpreters and people with hearing impairment from deaf associations, university students and secondary school students from Patandi Maalum Secondary school based in Arusha, Tanzania.

We had a plan of 3 trainings and edithons but we extended to 6, hence we were able to launch a Wiki4inclusion club at Patandi Maalum Secondary School where we conducted 3 sessions on different days (day.1-3). Also, we conducted 2 in-person events (training and editathon) in Dar es salaam plus online meet ups. All these activities were accompained by a motivational competition for participants and awarding the top most 5 contributors - the Dar es salaam group and Patandi Maalum Wiki4Inclusion club (deafs and sign language interpreters).

Also, we produced and uploaded videos and images on Wikimedia Commons and other videos are now available on our newly established YouTube Channel.

The approaches of collaboration and team work were most effective in achieving these results as we collaborated with a few experienced Wikimedians to facilitate and support newbies as well as checking contents developed. These also assisted in organizing events in collaboration with sign language interpreters.

Moreover, engaging education stakeholders such as Ministry of education, university and secondary school officers through their offices built a conducive environment and a go-ahead to implement our activities.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: I expect to learn how changes can positively impact the life of people especially with hearing impairment. Bridging the gap and providing a digital space for the deaf and related stakeholders will add value to the movement's goals and vision of letting every single human being free to share sum of all knowledge. Also, I'm expecting to learn the impact of team work leading to the desirable goals of the project.

This project has been crucial to the underserved community (sign language interpreters and the deaf people) in my country as they had never passed through such experience. Through collaboration and team work we were able to push our targets and achieve desirable goals than a single individual could achieve. This has resulted to establishment of a Wiki4Inclusion secondary school club and supportive editors group as well as media contents for our channels. The project now is on a sustainability plan and we expect the same support from the Foundation and other stakeholders for our next move (Phase. 2).

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Having a guest from the ministry of education - Meru district in Arusha, attending our the first training session at Patandi Maalum Secondary School. An education officer for special education (secondary schools) joined us and received training with other participants to feel the experience. This also paved a way to establishment of a Wiki4Inclusion club at the school with the first intake of 20 participants, we are expecting to enroll others in the second round.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

Just like I introduced the project at Wiki Student Summit 2024 which happened on 16 - 18 July 2024 in Arusha where I was invited to share the Wiki Indaba 2023 learnings, and Wiki4Inclusion Campaign In Tanzania being among impacts brought about by the Wiki Indaba conference, I'll also share the learnings in other upcoming events (national and international wise), community meet-ups and other platforms such as Meta and Diff.
