Rapid Fund Final Report

Application type: Standard application

Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

One of the most impactful approaches we took was forming strong partnerships and collaborations. These alliances enabled us to reach new members and expand our impact. We partnered with institutions such as the University of Ghana's Center for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies, our primary partner, and collaborated with the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN-Ghana), which provided us access to their peer-reviewed database of resources for referencing articles. We also worked with the Global Climate Change Network who led one of the group edit sessions on heatwaves.

Through our partnership with the University of Ghana's Climate Change Center, we were able to build the capacity of the students at the center. Additionally, our collaboration with the Tamale Wiki Hub allowed us to extend our impact to communities in Northern Ghana, including the Ashanti region, offering them the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the campaign. This collaboration also enabled us to engage with community members who have professional skills in photography and videography, contributing valuable photo and video content aligned with our campaign's theme.

INFO SESSION Without collaboration with the center for climate change, we hosted a first event which was the info session where we introduced the students and lecturers to wikipedia the campaign and also informed about the coming workshop. The session was an interactive one as so many questions were asked and addressed their misconceptions about wikipedia.

EVENT LAUNCH The campaign began with an online launch, where participants learned about the campaign’s goals, schedule, and how to participate. This initial program effectively introduced participants to the campaign's objectives and set clear expectations.

WEBINAR We organized an online webinar with the theme "Using Wikipedia as a Tool for Climate Action", where we invited Ruby D-Brown and Stephen Dakyi to highlight the impact of climate change and pollution, encouraged the addition of African content, and provided tips for improving Wikipedia entries. This webinar engaged participants from multiple countries and emphasized the importance of documenting climate issues.

WORKSHOPS We used a hybrid approach in our trainings, we offered both in-person and online trainings to ensure that members who could not join us in-person still had the opportunity to benefit from online training, webinars For the in-person workshops we hosted One in-person info session and 2 training workshop with the students from the University of Ghana center for climate change and sustainability studies We also hosted one in-person workshop in Tamale and another one in Walewale Breakout group During the in-person training incorporated break out session during the day two workshop

OFFICE HOURS We also provided weekly office hours where participants attended to ask questions and request assistance on specific areas and various support available via our WhatsApp group to ensure that A dedicated WhatsApp group was created which provided continuous support and allowed participants to ask questions and receive immediate assistance. This platform facilitated ongoing engagement and provided timely guidance. One on one support for late joiners ensured they received the necessary training and knowledge to contribute effectively, helping to integrate new participants smoothly. The combination of online sessions and local in-person training broadened participation and allowed for flexible learning options allowing all participants to get enough understanding of the campaign.

Regular reminders through broadcast messages and the promise of awards for top contributors kept participants engaged and motivated throughout the campaign. We recorded the training sessions and uploaded videos on our Youtube where they could easily stream.

These strategies collectively contributed to the campaign’s success, enhancing participant involvement and ensuring substantial contributions to the Wiki for Human Rights campaign.

Contest We hosted an online contest to engage experienced editors to contribute to content and articles and hosted a separate contest for all newbies who were enrolled on the campaign. Most of the newbies contributed to improving existing articles.

Result Achieved In total 90+ people were trained in person in total comprising of both students And we had 70+ people participating in the online training Participants have been enrolled on the community WhatsApp group for continued support and mentor them

The Newbies contributed a total of 1.74k edits and improved 515 articles and 47 commons uploads

This campaign has facilitated and endorsed a long term partnership with the Climate Change and Sustainability Studies department of the University of Ghana to host it annually.

Part 2: Learning

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: Which of the strategies is most effective for building local knowledge relating to climate change, sustainability and gender topics. What of the content forms (articles, images, videos, wikidata items) generated do people find most useful and why? What are the most effective ways for engaging knowledge experts to contribute climate change topics on Wikimedia projects? What are the most effective ways for engaging partners on climate knowledge building projects? How do Wikimedia Volunteer find editing about climate change topics Did volunteers find useful resources to help their contributions What other topics did volunteers find useful to contribute What was their experience translating climate change articles

Which of the strategies is most effective for building local knowledge relating to climate change, sustainability and gender topics.- We realized that engaging grassroot community is important not only important but also engaging people with some level of knowledge or interest related to the topic. We were amazed while engaging the climate change student on the various topics they wanted to edit due to their background.

After the initial training, we noticed that the number of edits was low. However, after the webinar where we highlighted the effects of pollution, climate change, and the importance of contributing content about Africa related to our campaign, participation increased significantly, and the number of edits rose sharply. From this experience, we learned that it's crucial to first educate participants about the significance and impact of a campaign before moving on to other activities. Encouraging women and giving them personalized support also proves to be very effective during the campaign. This strategy made it possible for a reasonable number of female participation in the campaign.

What of the content forms (articles, images, videos, wikidata items) generated do people find most useful and why?

The content that was found most useful were the pictures. This is because there are so many articles about climate change without pictures, however, the pictures better convey the intensity of the situation with visuals that can be more understood by the readers. Participants also found image content to be very impactful, especially for illustrating climate change effects, gender-related issues, and sustainable practices. Images often make complex topics more relatable and easier to understand.

Participants also found articles to be foundational for providing comprehensive information on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and gender topics. They found articles to be more versatile and can be easily accessed, edited, and expanded over time.

Videos: Additionally videos were seen as powerful for storytelling and demonstrating practical or real-life impacts of climate change and human induced problems compounding climate change. They engage a wider audience, particularly those who might find written content less accessible.

What are the most effective ways for engaging knowledge experts to contribute climate change topics on Wikimedia projects?

As mentioned, forming partnerships with academic institutions, NGOs, and other relevant organizations is key. These partnerships provided us access to experts, resources, and credibility. Hosting joint events, such as edit-a-thons or webinars with these partners, enabled us to draw in experts who may not have considered contributing otherwise.

Offering some form of recognition, through certificates, public acknowledgments encouraged experts to contribute their time and knowledge.

Through the partnership with the Climate Change Department at the University of Ghana we were able to engage their students for the training, again through partnership we were able to collaborate and engage resources and tools from our other partners from CDKN -Ghana and Global Climate Change Resolution.

What are the most effective ways for engaging partners on climate knowledge building projects?

The most effective ways for engaging knowledge experts to contribute climate change topics on Wikimedia projects are to identify an expert with interest in knowledge circulation, more especially those expertise already in the wikimedia space and explain to them specifically the climate change issues you need to engage them and the audience. The willingness of the expert together with the specificity of the topic makes the knowledge sharing so effective. This is the strategy we used during our webinar and it proved very effective.

The volunteers were so excited contributing about climate change most especially being highlighted about the potential impact of their contributions. Translating climate change articles to other languages was challenging due to the unavailability of some terms in their local languages. However, it was fairly interesting.

Involving partners in the planning stages enhance a sense of ownership and shared responsibility. This approach lead to more innovative ideas and stronger, more sustainable outcomes. Maintaining open communication ensured that all partners were aligned and can contribute effectively throughout the project lifecycle. Showcasing the impact on the project on social media demonstrated how their participation was beneficial to them and increased their brand visibility.

How do Wikimedia Volunteers find editing about climate change topics? Did volunteers find useful resources to help their contributions What other topics did volunteers find useful to contribute What was their experience translating climate change articles?

The volunteers were so excited contributing about climate change most especially being highlighted about the potential impact of their contributions. Translating climate change articles to other languages was challenging due to the unavailability of some terms in their local languages. However, it was fairly interesting.

Challenges: Volunteers often face challenges in finding credible and up-to-date resources, given the rapidly evolving nature of climate change science.

Useful Resources: Volunteers found academic journals, reports, news publications, from credible organizations and websites (like IPCC), and partnership-provided resources most helpful in their contributions. Interest Areas: Beyond climate change, volunteers showed interest in related topics such as sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and gender impacts of climate change. Translation Experience: Translating climate change articles can be challenging due to the technical terminology, but it’s crucial for making this knowledge accessible to non-English speakers. Volunteers often appreciate support tools, like glossaries and translation guides, to aid in this process.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

1. Higher-than-expected participation and engagement from participants. 2. Online content or activities going viral and reaching a wider audience than anticipated 3. Although the topic or theme focused on pollution we realized that the students were comfortable documenting on topics that they were either taking in class and were more familiar under climate change 4.

Lessons 1. We should be prepared to adapt to unexpected situations. 2. We should be opened to embrace unexpected surprises like opportunities and innovations that may arise 3. We also learnt one thing with the registration tool, participants who wanted to later register on the dashboard after the registration deadline on the tool could not enroll on dashboard which let us to create another dashboard

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

1. We wrote blog posts on Diff to share insights, lessons learnt and project outcomes with other community members. The blog post 2. Attend community events to share project results and learn from others. 3. We activated several social media posts and engagements around the campaign on Facebook , Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok have been made to share updates, achievements and aid learnings. 4.Provide training and capacity building programs for our hub members. 5.Establish feedback mechanism to gather insights from hub members and improve future campaigns
