4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Neither agree nor disagree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Our efforts to attract participants and expand content, particularly among underrepresented groups, centered on inclusivity and accessibility. We proactively engaged with diverse communities, partnered with local organizations, and offered inclusive educational resources, ensuring that individuals from varied backgrounds and experience levels could participate. Language accessibility, cultural sensitivity, and an environmental focus created a welcoming atmosphere. Incentives were structured to cater to diverse motivations, and active community engagement fostered a sense of belonging. Our commitment to representing underrepresented natural and cultural heritage sites further enriched content diversity. Overall, these efforts contributed to a more inclusive and diverse Wiki Loves Earth 2023 in Zambia, promoting both participation and content creation among underrepresented groups.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Through my involvement in Wiki Loves Earth Zambia, I've learned key leadership, project management, community engagement, content creation, advocacy, and partnership-building skills. This experience has been invaluable for honing my ability to lead teams, manage projects effectively, engage communities, create and manage content on Wikimedia platforms, advocate for causes, and build strategic partnerships. These skills have not only enriched my knowledge but also prepared me for future leadership roles and contributions across various domains.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

During Wiki Loves Earth 2023, the unexpected rise in participation by amateur phone photographers brought about both positive surprises, such as fresh perspectives and heightened enthusiasm, and negative challenges, including technical hurdles and content curation issues. This shift emphasized the importance of embracing diversity among contributors, regardless of their equipment or experience. Key learnings included the necessity of tailored support and training for smartphone photographers, streamlining content curation processes, and the importance of inclusive outreach efforts to cater to a broad range of participants. These experiences underscored the value of democratizing content creation and knowledge sharing within the Wikimedia community.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

From my experience with Wiki Loves Earth 2023 in Zambia, I've learned valuable lessons that will guide our future efforts. We want to make sure that more people, especially those using their phones for photography, can participate. We'll create easy-to-follow guides to help them take better photos and add them to Wikimedia. Streamlining the process of selecting the best photos will be a priority, and we'll work with diverse groups to get more people involved. Promoting environmental awareness will continue to be a focus. Strengthening the Wikimedia community in Zambia is a key goal, and we'll also share our learnings with others to help them do the same.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

As the newly established Wikimedia Community User Group Zambia, I am excited about the potential for collaborations and networking opportunities. Leveraging our community's strength is key, and I look forward to fostering partnerships with other organizations to amplify our impact within the Wikimedia movement. And also planning for Wiki Loves Earth Zambia in 2024 under this affiliation aligns seamlessly with our long-term goals. Registering as an NGO in Zambia is a significant step, enhancing our credibility and outreach. This formal structure will promote sustainable growth and increased recognition locally. Encouraging open dialogue within our community is vital. I hope that we could explore innovative ideas, fostering a supportive environment for skill development and knowledge sharing. Prioritizing inclusivity and diversity ensures a vibrant community reflecting Zambia's rich perspectives.
