Part 1: Project and impact

[edit]

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

The implemented activities for the "Wiki Loves Earth 2024 Madagascar" project included:

1. Photography and Wikimedia training workshops in 4 regions (Analamanga, Boeny, Diana, Matsiatra ambony), where participants learned how to capture high-quality images of natural heritage sites, edit them, and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. These workshops empowered participants to contribute effectively to the Wikimedia platform.

2. Two-day photo trips to natural heritage sites such as Andasibe, Ranomafana, Ankarana, and Ankarafantsika. These excursions enabled participants to explore and document Madagascar’s biodiversity, capturing unique images that enriched the Wikimedia Commons platform.

3. Photo upload sessions, where participants were supported by experienced volunteers to simplify the process of uploading images to Wikimedia Commons. This hands-on assistance helped overcome technical barriers, ensuring higher rates of participation.

4. Award ceremonies to recognize the best contributions. These events fostered a sense of accomplishment among participants and encouraged future engagement. ( not done yet)

Results achieved:

  • 92 participants were engaged in the activities: 20 from Antananarivo, 26 from Diego,22 from Majunga, 24 from Fianarantsoa
  • 1380 photos were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
  • 34 Wikipedia articles were created or improved

Effective approaches:

  • Hands-on workshops: The training sessions were instrumental in equipping participants with practical skills, leading to high-quality contributions.
  • Field trips: The photo outings motivated participants by providing them with a direct connection to the subject matter, which boosted their creativity and commitment to the project.
  • Assisted upload sessions: These simplified the technical aspects of contributing to Wikimedia, making the process smoother for new contributors.

Part 2: Learning

[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: Établissant cette demande de financement, j’ai appris comment demander un financement rapide , comment collaborer dans la diversité de 4 régions de Madagascar.

From our learning questions, we gained two key insights:

1. Requesting rapid funding: We learned how to craft clear, concise funding proposals, which will help us streamline future applications.

2. Collaborating across regions: Managing volunteers in 4 different regions taught us effective remote coordination through virtual meetings and social media. We also learned the importance of adapting to regional differences in capacity and access.

In the future, we’ll use these lessons to refine our funding requests and improve remote collaboration, ensuring broader and more inclusive project execution.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

Positive: We were surprised by the high level of enthusiasm from participants during the photo workshops and expeditions. Many were more engaged than expected, resulting in the collection of over 1,000 photos—exceeding our initial target of 800. This highlighted the value of hands-on activities and community-driven initiatives.

Negative: A key challenge was unreliable internet access in some regions, which delayed the photo uploads to Wikimedia Commons. We learned that providing offline solutions, such as saving work locally and scheduling upload sessions when connectivity improves, can help overcome these hurdles.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

Community Workshops: We will organize follow-up workshops in each of the four regions where participants can share their experiences and insights. These sessions will facilitate discussions on best practices and challenges encountered during the project.

Online Reports and Articles: We will publish detailed reports on our project outcomes, including metrics and participant feedback, on platforms like Wikimedia Commons and social media. This will ensure broader accessibility to our findings.

Webinars: We plan to host webinars that will summarize the project's successes and challenges. These will be open to anyone interested in participating in similar initiatives, providing an interactive platform for Q&A. ( Debut November)

Engagement on Wikimedia Platforms: We will access to our results on relevant Wikimedia pages,

Part 3: Metrics

[edit]

7. Wikimedia Metrics results. (required)

In your application, you set some Wikimedia targets in numbers (Wikimedia metrics). In this section, you will describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used.

8. Other Metrics results.

In your proposal, you could also set Other Metrics targets. Please describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used if you set Other Metrics in your application.

Other Metrics name Metrics Description Target Result Tools and comments

9. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? (required)

Yes

9.1. Please state what difficulties you had. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges? (required)

We faced several difficulties managing the event page and dashboard during our project:

1. Technical Issues: We experienced problems with uploading images and ensuring all participants could access the event page.

Future Solution: We plan to provide training sessions and establish a support team for real-time assistance.

2. Data Management: Tracking contributions was challenging, as we struggled with dashboard input.

Future Solution: We'll contact a mentor to guide us

3. Coordination Across Regions: Ensuring consistent updates across four regions was difficult.

Future Solution: Regular virtual check-ins and a shared online workspace will improve communication.
We suggest providing:
  • Training Workshops: Focused on event management and dashboard usage.
  • Technical Support: A dedicated team during major events.
  • Resource Development: Comprehensive guides for organizers and participants.
