Part 2: Learning
[edit]4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: Through Wiki Loves Earth Zambia 2024, we aim to learn about effective community engagement strategies, assess project impact, enhance participant capacity, and strengthen partnerships. By engaging diverse stakeholders, measuring outcomes, providing learning opportunities, and fostering collaboration, we seek to advance knowledge sharing and environmental conservation efforts in Zambia. Through continuous learning and adaptation, we strive to maximize the project's effectiveness and contribute positively to Wikimedia initiatives and broader societal goals.
Through Wiki Loves Earth Zambia 2024, we focused on community engagement, project impact, participant capacity, and partnerships. We learned that direct collaboration with local communities and providing resources helped participants engage more effectively. Measuring outcomes through feedback showed us the impact of our efforts and allowed us to adjust our approach. In the future, we will use these lessons to improve community engagement, offer better training, and strengthen partnerships. By continuing to assess our work, we can increase the project's impact and contribute more to Wikimedia and environmental conservation goals.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
A lot of amateur-quality images were submitted in Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Zambia, which was both surprising and positive. While the competition attracted many new participants, including those from rural areas, the quality of some photos was below expectations.
Positive Surprises: Diverse Participation: Strong engagement came from various communities, especially rural areas. Interest in Photography: Many first-time participants showed interest in photography and Wikimedia, indicating the educational impact of the competition. Challenges: Amateur Submissions: Several blurry or poorly composed images made the review process more difficult. Technical Issues: Many participants used smartphones to capture and upload their photos, which made the technical process harder due to lower image quality and difficulties with uploading on Wikimedia Commons. Lessons Learned: Clearer submission guidelines and more training can help improve photo quality. Offering better support for smartphone users and simplifying the submission process would reduce technical difficulties. Despite these challenges, the competition successfully engaged new contributors and showcased Zambia’s natural beauty.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
To share the Wiki Loves Earth 2024 project learnings and results with other community members, I plan to take advantage of the planned programming for the Wikimedia User Group. As part of this, I will take a slot in one of the three workshops to share the insights gained from the competition. These sessions will focus on best practices, challenges faced, and ways to improve future initiatives. Additionally, a detailed project report will be shared within the Wikimedia Zambia community, summarizing the competition's successes, challenges, and lessons learned, along with tips for improving future competitions.
