Part 1: Project and impact

Phase 1: Documenting Cultural Heritage Activity: The activity for this phase was a collaborative session with the Ghana Wikimedia Language Communities and a field trip to the Savannah Center for Contemporary Arts and Red Clay Studios in Tamale. Result: We documented the artefacts related to Wiki Loves Living Heritage in other to enrich the Wikimedia Commons with valuable cultural heritage content.
Phase 2: Capacity Building with the National Folklore Board, Ghana
Activity: A training session in partnership with the National Folklore Board Ghana, focusing on Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource.
Result: We trained staff members and folklore club members on Wikimedia Platforms, empowering them to contribute to the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage.
Phase 3: Content Creating Contest with Wiki Loves Living Heritage Ghana and Ghana Wikimedia Language Communities.
Activity: We organised a contest encouraging contributions to Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons related to Living Heritage.
Result: Increased the quantity and quality of content on Wikimedia platforms, expanding the knowledge base of Ghanaian Cultural Heritage.
Effective Approaches
With regards to approaches, the following approaches proved to be highly effective in achieving the project’s goals:
Collaboration: Partnering with the Ghana Wikimedia Language Communities and the National Folklore Board Ghana established a strong collaborative environment, leveraging expertise and resources.
Hands-on Training: We provided practical training sessions empowering participants to directly contribute to Wikimedia projects, breaking down barriers and encouraging active participation.
Engaging Contests: The contest incentivized content creation, stimulating interest and motivating participants to share their knowledge and skills.
Visual Documentation: We captured and shared images of living heritage sites and artefacts through Wikimedia Commons making the project tangible and visually appealing.

Strategies for Capacity Building: The proposal outlines effective approaches for building capacity within a specific audience. We can see how workshops, leveraging existing initiatives, and fostering open communication contribute to successful knowledge sharing. 3. Sustainability in Wikimedia Projects: The focus on empowering long-term contributors through the National Folklore Board highlights a crucial aspect of sustainable content creation on Wikimedia projects. 4. By studying this proposal, we hope to gain valuable knowledge about fostering collaboration, building capacity, and promoting knowledge equity within online communities like Wikimedia.

By working with the National Folklore Board Ghana, we were able to leverage their expertise and reach a wider audience, particularly those who may not have been previously engaged with Wikimedia Projects. Future Application: We look forward to seeking out strategic partnerships with institutions and organisations that share our vision of promoting knowledge equity. By building strong relationships, we can create a more sustainable and impactful impact. Strategies for Capacity Building: Learning: The training sessions we organised with the National Folklore Board Ghana staff and the Onyx Folklore Club members highlighted the importance of hands-on training. By focusing on specific needs and providing practical guidance, we were able to empower participants to contribute effectively to the Wikimedia Projects. Future Application: We look forward to refining our training methodologies to ensure they are accessible, engaging and relevant to diverse audiences. By incorporating feedback from participants and adapting to evolving needs, we can optimize our capacity-building efforts. By providing ongoing support and mentorship, we can encourage sustained engagement with Wikimedia Projects especially (Wikipedia, WIkidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource). Future Application: We will prioritize the development of sustainable strategies for content creation and maintenance. This will involve establishing mentorship programs, organising regular edit-a-thons and promoting collaborative projects that foster a sense of community.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Negative: we could not get the photo contest added to the central notice banner which affected participation from the broader community.
Positive: had contributions from several Ghanaian language Wikipedia projects which increased the quality of articles on the Ghanaian language Wikis.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
We are looking forward to sharing these learnings with the Wiki Loves Living Heritage Community platform on Facebook and also with the Ghanaian Wikimedian Languages in other to provide insights to them on how important and beneficial it is to collaborate with external partners on working on Wikimedia projects such as wikisource that provides content in their local languages which they can document in their local wikis.
This would be done through a community call and at their next Ghana Wikimedia Language Conference.
We will also be publishing a Wikimedia diff post about the entire project and sharing that with the Wiki Loves Living Heritage Community and the Ghana Wikimedia Language Communities.
