Part 1 Understanding your work

[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The proposed activities and strategies were implemented as follows:

2. Translations via Collaborations: We reached out to local language communities, particularly the Dinka and Nuer communities, to collaborate on translating climate change content. We engaged community members who were proficient in these languages to ensure accurate and culturally relevant translations. This collaborative approach helped to make the information accessible to a broader audience.
3. Editathon and Training: We conducted training sessions and an editathon with the involvement of academia, particularly Juba University. These sessions aimed to train participants on various aspects of Wikimedia projects, including editing, creating articles, and utilizing tools like Wikidata and Wiktionary. The training equipped participants with the necessary skills to contribute to climate change-related content on Wikimedia platforms.
4. Support for Minority Topics: During the training sessions and editathon, we emphasized the importance of addressing minority topics and perspectives related to climate change. We provided guidance on how to incorporate diverse voices and ensure the inclusion of underrepresented issues. Participants were encouraged to research and create content that sheds light on the specific impacts faced by marginalized communities.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

1. Collaborating with local language communities: Partnering with local language communities, such as the Dinka and Nuer communities, was highly effective. It ensured that climate change information was accessible to a wider audience. By involving community members who were proficient in these languages, we were able to provide accurate and culturally relevant translations.

2. Training and capacity building: The training sessions conducted for students, environmental activists, and individuals passionate about climate change played a crucial role in achieving our goals. By equipping participants with the necessary skills to contribute to Wikimedia projects, we empowered them to actively create and edit climate change-related content.
3. Engaging academia and universities: Partnering with academia, particularly Juba University, proved effective in achieving our goals. The university housed many activists and students interested in studying and writing about climate change and the environment.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

Part 2: Your main learning

[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

During the campaign period, we focused on several learning priorities outlined in our application. Here is what we learned about these areas:

1. Climate Change Awareness: Through the training sessions and collaborative efforts, we deepened our understanding of climate change and its impacts in South Sudan. We learned about the specific challenges faced by the region, such as extreme flooding events and their effects on communities.
2. Wikimedia Projects: Our training sessions provided valuable insights into various Wikimedia projects, including Wikidata, Wiktionary, and Wikipedia. We learned how to effectively navigate these platforms, create and edit articles, and utilize the available tools and resources.
3. Translation and Localization: Collaborating with local language communities, such as the Dinka and Nuer communities, taught us the importance of translation and localization in reaching a broader audience. We learned about the linguistic and cultural nuances that must be considered when translating climate change content.
4. Partnerships and Community Engagement: Working with academia, particularly Juba University, allowed us to establish meaningful partnerships and engage with passionate individuals. We learned the importance of fostering a sense of community and creating a supportive environment for contributors. Building relationships with local language communities and activists further highlighted the power of collaboration in achieving common goals.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

we managed to retain our 20 new members, and they are participating in the other projects

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

that once with proper peer-to-peer learning we can be able to retain more people

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
