General information[edit]

  • Title of Proposal: Wikimedia Awareness in Offa Community
  • Username of Applicant: Mijesty
  • Name of Organization: N/A
  • Amount awarded: 2050
  • Amount spent: 2050 USD, 941270 NGN

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

firstly we created awareness for the program online and offline using e-posters and handbills after the planning stage which took place a week before the commencement of the project, then we choose a higher institution in Offa community which will make it easy for us to reach our target audience. We then visited the school to carry out a pre-evaluation check and to also give out handbills to invite interested participants. During the planning stage we prepared training materials, slides, and documents which help put participants through, we introduced the students/participants to the core content policies and Wikimedia-friendly space policy to aid their editing journey.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

We adopted and introduced students to the Wikimedia core content policies, introduced them to tools needed to contribute to Wikipedia, and equipped them with the necessary skills needed to participate efficiently. To ensure that the participants understood properly we carried out practical-hands-on edit-a-thon both online and physically, we also prepared materials and tutorials to demonstrate how to use each tool on Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wiki Commons and Yoruba Wikipedia.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Offa is an under-represented community despite its rich cultural heritage and the fact that it is an ancient city in Nigeria, its online presence on Wikipedia was very low until this campaign gave the participants an opportunity to write and improve their stories, the participants were very eager to make a difference and improve contents about Offa on Wikipedia and its sister projects after it was introduced to them.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

At the end of the program, we were able to certify at least 50 participants who attended the physical event and participated in the project, my team and I learned that there was a lot of ignorance and misconception about Wikipedia, the participants and other members of the community knew very little about Wikipedia and its benefits to their education and other aspects of their life. We also learned that incorporating the culture and heritage of the people further encouraged them to contribute and participate in the project coupled with the fact that they could see their progress and contribution on the dashboard made them excited and eager to contribute.

Participants expressed their satisfaction at the end of the project and a lot of them were still willing to contribute to the Wikimedia projects they were introduced to.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

We experienced some difficulties getting approval for the photo walk from the local authorities and also for the physical venue since we were trying to introduce something new to the community but my team and I explained in detail to the authorities and lectured them on the benefits of the program which convinced them to give us a go-ahead to create awareness about the project.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

With the new information gathered from executing this project, I believe engaging other students from other schools will be easier and more effective for me and my team.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

In your application, you defined some open metrics and targets (goals). You will see a table like the one below with your metric in the title and the target you set in your proposal automatically filled in. Use the tables to report the result. Use the comments column to describe any aspects of this result that you find relevant. If the results were different from the initial target (goals) then you can explain why and what you learned from this. You can also provide any qualitative analysis regarding these results. In the last column please describe the tools and methodology used to collect this data and any difficulties you might have had.
