Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

Building a Contributor Community:

We actively recruited individuals in the Kilimanjaro region interested in contributing to Swahili Wikipedia.

Conducted two in-person training sessions, each lasting about 3 hours, to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills for effective contributions to Wikimedia projects. Topics covered included Wikipedia guidelines, editing techniques, and best practices.

Documenting Climate Change and Sustainability Topics: Organized the WikiforHuman rights campaign, which featured edit-a-thon events where experienced Wikipedia editors collaborated to create and enhance articles on climate change and sustainability topics in the Swahili language. Held a writing contest that focused on encouraging contributions of high-quality articles related to climate change and sustainability on Swahili Wikipedia within a specified timeframe. Prizes or recognition were offered to motivate participants. Promoted these activities through various channels, including social media, local community networks, and educational institutions, by sharing engaging content and updates to create awareness and encourage broader participation.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

The WikiForHumanRights campaign effectively leveraged a combination of strategies and approaches to achieve its goals. These included hands-on training, community building, collaborative events, incentivized contributions, outreach and promotion, vigilant monitoring, and a rigorous impact assessment process. By empowering contributors, fostering collaboration, and continuously evaluating progress, the campaign successfully improved the availability and accessibility of climate change and environmental information in the Swahili language on Wikipedia, contributing to a safer and more informed world.

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

The success in attracting participants and building content, especially for underrepresented groups, was driven by a combination of inclusive outreach, customized support, content relevance, cultural sensitivity, recognition, and ongoing engagement. These efforts not only helped enrich the content related to climate change and sustainability on Swahili Wikipedia but also promoted diversity and inclusivity within the contributor community, ensuring that a broader range of voices and perspectives were represented

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

Expanding and Diversifying Content: The campaign significantly expanded and diversified climate change and sustainability content on Wikimedia platforms, enhancing both quantity and quality. Diverse topics and perspectives enriched the content, making it comprehensive and informative.

Inclusion of Knowledge: Yes, climate change and sustainability knowledge have been effectively included on Wikimedia platforms. The campaign successfully made this knowledge accessible to a broader audience, contributing to a more informed global discussion.

Collaboration Success: Collaboration with other organizations was a key success of the campaign, facilitating access to underrepresented knowledge and expertise. These partnerships enriched our content and expanded our reach.

New Participant Engagement: New participants have shown a strong interest in continuing to volunteer on Wikimedia projects. Their sustained engagement reflects successful community-building efforts, driven by purpose and a collaborative spirit. They are committed to long-term contributions.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Positive Surprises: Increased Participant Engagement: We were pleasantly surprised by the high level of engagement and enthusiasm among new participants. Many of them demonstrated a deep commitment to contributing to Wikimedia projects beyond the campaign's duration. This unexpected dedication showcased the power of purpose-driven initiatives.

Quality of Contributions: Some newcomers exhibited remarkable skills and expertise, contributing high-quality content beyond our initial expectations. This demonstrated the untapped potential within our contributor community and highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for skill development Negative Surprises:

Technical Challenges: We encountered unexpected technical issues that temporarily disrupted the editing process for participants. These challenges, while frustrating, served as a reminder of the need for ongoing technical support and resources to ensure a smooth experience.

Learnings from these Experiences:

Flexibility and Adaptation: Unexpected situations underscored the importance of flexibility in campaign planning. Being able to adapt to evolving circumstances and swiftly address challenges is vital for successful implementation.

Community Support: Positive surprises emphasized the value of building a supportive and inclusive contributor community. Nurturing a sense of belonging and purpose can lead to sustained engagement.

The learning from this campaign will serve as a foundation for continuous improvement and growth. We are eager to implement these insights to refine our activities, set new priorities, and work towards more ambitious goals in the future, ultimately advancing our mission to promote climate change awareness and knowledge dissemination through Wikimedia projects.
