Part 1: Project and impact

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

Awareness Creation: The awareness of Wikimedia Awareness in Ilesa was disseminated online via social media platforms; Facebook, X and WhatsApp.

Recruitment: 50 editors were recruited during the awareness campaign.

Training: Two sessions of virtual and physical trainings were organized for participants where they were trained on how to add or improve local content related to Ilesa and Osun State on English Wikipedia, Wikipedia Commons, and Wikidata.

Community Building: Wikimedia Fan Club University of Ilesa formation has reached the final approval stage with the Dean of Student Affairs. This will be updated once it is approved.

Yes, the project significantly raised awareness about Wikimedia and her projects, awareness was carried out online via social media and offline from mouth to mouth.

  • Did the project train new editors to have the required skills to edit Wikimedia projects?

Yes, over 20 new editors were trained.

  • Was the project beneficial to the target participants in terms of their full satisfaction with the knowledge they acquired?

Yes, this can be attested to looking at the contributions they made during and after the event.

Did the participants contribute contents to Wikipedia and it's sisters' projects?

Yes, participants contributed to contents on Wikipedia, WIkidata, and Wikicommons.'

Did the project create a sustainable group of Wikimedia editors in the Ilesa community?

The project has proposed the establishment of a Club for Wikipedia editors in the University of Ilesa.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

We encountered some challenges, the University of Ilesa which happens our major target for participants has internal issues which affected our turn out at the first physical training and the registration of the club with the university authority. Additionally, there's a sudden upsurge in prices of commodities in Nigeria which was unplanned for, however, we were able to work with available resources. We felt the urge to inspire participants as they are majorly new editors, so we had to organize a contest among them (link above).

From the experiences, we learn that quality plans and team work are essential for succesful project organizing.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

The outcomes from the project have been shared with wikimedians across Nigeria through the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, this was done by sharing the links to the project dashboard. The contribution and achievement of participants are highlighted.
