Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

Wikipedia After School provided an invaluable experience for all involved. Our strategy unfolded in several stages:

Firstly, our primary goal was to recruit new users from schools in Metlaoui. To achieve this, we conducted informational sessions and presentations to raise awareness among students about the value of Wikipedia as a collaborative educational resource.

Following the recruitment of participants, we divided them into six teams. Each team was tasked with leading and facilitating over 10 different workshops. These workshops covered a range of topics, including editing Wikipedia content, online research skills, and source reliability assessment. Each team was encouraged to share their knowledge and expertise with fellow group members, fostering collaborative learning and a rich educational experience.

To maintain participant engagement and encourage ongoing involvement, we implemented various alternative activities. These included editing contests, advanced training sessions, educational outings, and social events. By offering a diverse range of activities, we ensured that participants could find learning opportunities that matched their interests and preferences while reinforcing their commitment to the Wikipedia After School program.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Our strategy for enhancing participation involved implementing incentives such as gifts and photo walks to increase engagement among participants. Firstly, we recognized the importance of acknowledging and rewarding the efforts of our participants. To this end, we offered incentives such as gift and certificates of achievement to individuals who actively contributed to the program. These incentives not only served as a token of appreciation but also provided tangible rewards that motivated participants to continue their involvement. In addition to tangible rewards, we organized photo walks as a unique and interactive way to encourage participation. These walks provided participants with the opportunity to explore their surroundings, capture photos related to specific themes or topics, and contribute their images to Wikimedia Commons or other platforms. By combining photography with outdoor activities, we aimed to foster creativity, inspire exploration, and spark interest in the broader goals of the program. Furthermore, we leveraged social media and online platforms to showcase the work and achievements of participants, thereby creating a sense of recognition and validation within the community. By highlighting the contributions of individuals and teams, we not only celebrated their accomplishments but also inspired others to join in and be part of the initiative.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Neither agree nor disagree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Neither agree nor disagree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Certainly, our efforts went beyond traditional recruitment methods to ensure the inclusion of underrepresented groups and to build out content that reflects diverse perspectives. One key aspect of our approach was actively reaching out to communities and organizations that represent underrepresented groups. We collaborated with local community centers, cultural organizations, and educational institutions to promote our initiative and invite participation from diverse backgrounds. By establishing partnerships with these groups, we were able to tap into their networks and engage individuals who may not have otherwise been aware of or involved in our program.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

During this period, we dedicated significant efforts to advancing our learning priorities in Wikipedia management and editing, as well as enhancing our understanding of managing Wikimedia user groups and engaging with the broader Wikimedia community. In terms of Wikipedia management and editing, we delved into various aspects of the platform, including understanding the intricacies of article creation, editing guidelines, and citation practices. Through hands-on editing sessions and guided tutorials, we gained practical experience in navigating the Wikipedia interface, conducting research, and contributing content in accordance with Wikipedia's standards and policies. Additionally, we explored advanced editing techniques, such as adding multimedia elements, formatting articles, and resolving disputes within the editing community. This period of focused learning allowed us to develop a deeper appreciation for the collaborative nature of Wikipedia and the importance of maintaining accuracy, neutrality, and verifiability in content creation. Overall, this period of focused learning provided us with valuable insights and skills that will serve as a solid foundation for our continued involvement in Wikipedia management and editing, as well as our ongoing efforts to contribute to the Wikimedia movement and foster collaboration within theglobal Wikimedia community. We remain committed to further honing our expertise in these areas and actively contributing to the growth of Wikipedia

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Yes, several unexpected and surprising situations arose during the implementation of our activities, presenting both positive and negative outcomes. Here are a few examples and the lessons learned from each: Unexpected Positive Outcome: During one of our Wikipedia editing workshops, we encountered a participant who initially appeared disinterested and hesitant to engage with the material. However, as the session progressed, they became increasingly enthusiastic and actively contributed to editing articles. It was surprising to witness this transformation and see how our guidance and encouragement helped unlock their potential. Lesson Learned: This experience reinforced the importance of patience and perseverance when working with participants who may initially seem unengaged. It taught us the value of providing personalized support and creating a supportive learning environment that encourages individuals to step out of their comfort zones and explore new skills. Unexpected Negative Outcome: In another instance, we faced technical difficulties during a virtual Wikimedia user group meeting, resulting in disruptions and delays in our planned agenda. This unexpected challenge led to frustration among participants and impacted the overall effectiveness of the meeting. Lesson Learned: This experience highlighted the importance of thorough preparation and contingency planning when organizing virtual events.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We intend to leverage our learning in several ways to further enhance our contributions to Wikipedia and the broader Wikimedia community: New Priorities: Based on our learning, we aim to prioritize initiatives that foster inclusivity and diversity within Wikipedia. This includes actively engaging with underrepresented groups, promoting multilingualism, and addressing content gaps on topics related to marginalized communities. Ideas for Activities: We plan to implement a series of targeted workshops and training sessions aimed at equipping Wikipedia editors with advanced editing skills, such as template creation, citation management, and content translation. Additionally, we aspire to organize thematic editing events focused on addressing specific content gaps or improving the quality of articles in certain subject areas. Goals for the Future: Our overarching goal is to contribute to the growth and sustainability of Wikipedia as a comprehensive and reliable knowledge resource. To achieve this, we will continue to collaborate with other Wikimedia affiliates and community members, advocate for open access to knowledge, and promote the principles of free culture and open collaboration. Furthermore, we aspire to establish stronger connections with local educational institutions, cultural organizations, and community groups to expand the reach of our initiatives and encourage broader participation in Wikipedia editing and content creation.
