General information[edit]

  • Title of Proposal: Writing Rivers History in Wikipedia
  • Username of Applicant: Ugwulebo
  • Name of Organization: N/A
  • Amount awarded: 2000
  • Amount spent: 2000 USD, 918934 NGN

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

The project strategy of building capacity of historians and history students at the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies, University of Port Harcourt, was achieved through series of online and in-person trainings which were organized in the University. The was followed by an edit-a-thon and write-a-thon, where participants improved and created new Rivers related Wikipedia articles. A documentation page was created by the organizers, where a topic list was created.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Yes. Creation of a documentation page, where articles to be created and improved was listed helped the participants to know what was missing on Wikipedia. The series of online and in-person trainings organized also helped in achieving our goals as over 50% of the participants were new to Wikipedia editing.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

We had series of engagements with the Head of Department of History and Diplomatic Studies, University of Port Harcourt. This helped increased participation in the training and write-a-thon. We equally had virtual learning circles and office hours, where participants were trained about content creation on Wikipedia.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

It was interesting to learn that a good number of history students and lecturers have good perception about the use of Wikipedia for documenting Rivers History. Furthermore, the revelation from this project shows that Wikipedia is usually the first point of call for a good number of history students and historians when seeking information. Given their exposure, history students and historians are willing to continue contributing content to Wikipedia even after this project. Although, challenges like high cost of Internet Data and continuous IP block issues could hinder their future participation.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Nothing unexpected happened

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

The learnings from this project has certainly reinforced the need to scale up this project in other parts of Nigeria.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).
