Part 1: Project and impact[edit]

1. Describe the implemented activities and results achieved. Additionally, share which approaches were most effective in supporting you to achieve the results. (required)

To promote the SheSaid campaign and encourage contributions to Wikiquote, several activities were implemented, resulting in significant outcomes.

We Advocated and raised awareness of the SheSaid campaign across social media platforms. Distributed fliers, e-posters, and shared inspiring quotes from notable Nigerian women. Created a designated WhatsApp group for campaign participants. Utilized Google Forms for event registration and gathering participant availability.

Two physical events were conducted targeting a large audience, especially girl students. Day one included an introduction to Wikimedia Foundation, Wikiquote, and the SheSaid campaign. Provided intensive training on contributing to Wikiquote, including article creation and improvement. Day two involved a hands-on edit-a-thon, rewarding the highest editor with data. A follow up online session was organized with trainer TochiPrecious, focusing on training participants on using visual editor, which accommodated all participants, including those unable to attend the physical events.

A three weeks online contests was hosted to assess participants' understanding and contributions to Wikiquote. Conducted a virtual webinar featuring Florence Devouard, former chair of Wikimedia Foundation. Participants got to share their contributions to Wikiquote, global results of created and improved articles was also shared by Florence. The webinar facilitated a Q&A session, enhancing engagement and knowledge sharing.

Effective Approaches:

Two-Day Physical Events: Provided participants with time to digest training materials. Offered slides and resources for effective contribution to Wikiquote. Conducted one-on-one mentoring sessions for individuals needing additional guidance.

Weekly Data Support: Offered support and encouragement to active participants through weekly data rewards. Which we used to motivate both active and passive participants to contribute to the campaign.

The Virtual Webinar fostered a sense of community among enthusiasts interested in bridging the gender gap on Wikiquote. Providing a platform for knowledge exchange and networking opportunities.

Part 2: Learning[edit]

4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)

You can recall these learning questions below: By organizing this event, I hope to gain skills in:

  • Recruiting and engaging editors, especially women, in Wikimedia activities
  • Providing effective onboarding and training on Wikiquote editing
  • Building an inclusive community and driving participation to address content gaps
  • Determining effective follow-up strategies to sustain editor retention
  • Collaborating with the SheSaid team to learn event organizing best practices
  • Developing my mentoring, leadership, and facilitation abilities for diversity initiatives

Additionally, I want to better understand:

  • What motivates Nigerian women to get involved with editing Wikiquote
  • The specific impact of edit-a-thon activities on expanding women's representation
  • How to accurately track and assess progress on closing content gaps

By pursuing these learning objectives, I aim to gain experience and insight to continue improving gender diversity across the Wikimedia movement, both locally and globally.

The focus on learning outcomes in editor engagement, inclusive spaces, and measurable impact will help me evolve as an organizer committed to elevating women’s voices on Wikimedia projects.

The project provided me with a comprehensive understanding of various aspects crucial for promoting gender diversity within the Wikimedia community. To begin, I learned effective strategies for recruiting and engaging women editors. This involved tailored outreach efforts, understanding their interests and motivations, and creating welcoming spaces for participation.

Additionally, I gained insights into providing comprehensive training to newcomers interested in Wikiquote editing. This included developing accessible onboarding processes and training materials to facilitate their integration into the platform effectively. By ensuring that training is tailored to the specific needs and interests of participants, we can increase their confidence and skills in contributing to Wikimedia projects.

Moreover, fostering inclusivity emerged as a significant focus area. I learned strategies for creating inclusive communities and driving participation from underrepresented groups. This involves actively addressing barriers to participation and creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and included.

Sustaining editor retention was another crucial aspect of the project. I explored effective follow-up strategies to maintain engagement beyond the initial event, ensuring continued participation and contribution from editors. This involves ongoing support, feedback mechanisms, and recognition for their contributions.

Furthermore, event organizing best practices were highlighted through collaboration with the SheSaid team. Learning from their expertise in event management provided valuable insights into ensuring the success and impact of future initiatives.

Additionally, I developed mentoring, leadership, and facilitation abilities tailored to diversity initiatives. This involved providing guidance and support to participants, fostering leadership skills within the community, and facilitating meaningful discussions and collaborations.

Understanding the motivations of Nigerian women to engage in Wikiquote editing was another significant aspect of the project. By gaining insights into their interests and aspirations, we can tailor our outreach efforts to effectively engage this demographic.

Finally, accurate tracking and assessment of progress on content gaps were emphasized. By implementing robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, we can measure the impact of our interventions and make informed decisions to further advance gender diversity within the Wikimedia movement.

In the future, I plan to integrate these learnings into my Wikimedia endeavors by applying effective recruitment and engagement strategies, providing tailored training and support, fostering inclusivity and community building, implementing sustainable retention practices, organizing successful events, offering mentorship, understanding the motivations of diverse demographics, and accurately tracking progress on content gaps. These efforts will contribute to creating a more equitable and inclusive space where diverse voices are not only heard but also valued and celebrated within the Wikimedia community.

5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)

During the implementation of our activities, we encountered unexpected delays in holding the virtual webinar despite meticulous planning. This delay caused some inconvenience to participants who were eagerly awaiting the event. However, the positive aspect was the large turnout for both the physical events and the follow-up online session indicating strong interest from the targeted audience and participants. From this experience, I learned the importance of having contingency plans in place to mitigate unexpected delays and ensure smooth execution of all components of an event. Additionally, effective communication with participants about any changes or delays is crucial to manage expectations and maintain engagement.

6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)

To share the project learnings and results with other community members, I plan to create detailed reports outlining the project methodologies, findings, and recommendations. These reports will serve as comprehensive resources for community members seeking insights into effective strategies for promoting gender diversity within the Wikimedia community.

Additionally, I will actively engage with community members through online platforms such as Wikimedia mailing lists, forums, and social media channels. By sharing project updates, resources, and engaging in discussions, I aim to foster dialogue and collaboration among community members towards advancing gender diversity initiatives within Wikimedia.
