  • Name of Organization: Wiki Loves Folklore International Team

  • Amount awarded: 26061.46 USD, 28401.4 CAD
  • Amount spent: 10400 USD

Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

We established effective collaboration with local coordinators and National organisers from both "Wiki Loves Folklore" and "Feminism and Folklore." Our primary modes of communication were emails and community calls, focusing on aiding them in tasks such as page creation, utilisation of the upload wizard, central notice, dashboard, and the fountain tool.

In a bid to enhance coordination, we dispatched mass messages to our coordinators. These communications played a pivotal role in enabling coordinators to liaise with local partners and media representatives, who subsequently advocated for the campaign within their respective countries. To furnish additional support to the organisers, we supplied a list of articles tailored for the Feminism and Folklore campaigns, accessible at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Feminism_and_Folklore_2023/List_of_Articles. Additionally, we assisted in the creation of localised lists upon receiving requests from organisers. These lists are available at https://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AE%AA%E0%AE%AF%E0%AE%A9%E0%AE%B0%E0%AF%8D:Tiven2240/fnf and https://mr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A4%B8%E0%A4%A6%E0%A4%B8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%AF:Tiven2240/fnf.

By garnering community feedback on guidelines and principles, we succeeded in crafting communication materials. These resources became an invaluable asset for local organisers in the promotion of their events.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

We engaged with communities promptly and efficiently, and numerous organisations served as our media partners by featuring our campaign on their websites. Furthermore, we provided workshop support to six Wikimedia communities: Assamese Wikimedia Community, Bikol Wikipedia Community, Fante Wikipedia Community, Karavali Wikimedians, Odia Wikimedia Community, and the Tamil Wikipedia Community. These workshop support enhanced article creation and user engagement within these communities. The workshops fostered a sense of community spirit, as participants convened post-pandemic to co-create articles focusing on local culture and women. This strategy offered chances for independent groups and individuals to conduct campaigns within their respective countries. Notably, these activities were highlighted in local newspapers, and participants were motivated by opportunities to win global-level prizes due to significant contributions. Comprehensive reports detailing the achievements and learnings of these communities can be accessed at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Microgrants_reports_for_WLF2023. Plans are underway to extend this support in future editions.

Additionally, we provided users with internet and childcare support for the first time during the writing competitions on Feminism and Folklore. The primary goal of this stipend was to aid jurors and organisers with internet support, proving advantageous while reviewing articles using the Fountain and Montage tools. This assistance fostered a positive atmosphere among the volunteers and served as a morale booster, acknowledging their dedication towards completing the jury process for Feminism and Folklore and Wiki Loves Folklore.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

2023 Wiki Loves Folklore Summary:

Expansion: Wiki Loves Folklore 2023 saw its reach double, expanding from 16 to 32 organising countries.

Submissions: The event received more over 38,000 images, a record number.

Promotion & Sessions: We facilitated a Wiki Loves Folklore promotional session at the Indian Photo Fest on November 19, 2022, featuring an introductory talk on Wikimedia Commons and understanding the CC License. Additionally, there was a video presentation commemorating five years of Feminism and Folklore and a South Asia Coordinators Planning Meeting at WCI 2023 on April 28, 2023. Wiki Loves Folklore was represented through a poster session and two in-person discussions like Wiki Loves Folklore - Five Years of Global Campaign and Wiki Loves Campaigns: When, Why and How? at Wikimania, along with a session focusing on the Ethical Documentation of Living Heritage. This instigated a round-table discussion among volunteers contributing to Wikimedia Commons, emphasising the need to ethically document cultural living heritage.

Unique Organising Method: Our method of organising Wiki Loves Folklore sets us apart notably from other campaigns, which typically only allow participation from countries that have organised national teams, thus excluding those without such representation. We employ a dual structure, enabling not only the recognition of national winners through national teams but also the appointment of an international jury for the global level by an international team. This distinct approach promotes contributions from underrepresented communities, cultivating inclusivity within the contest.

Future Goals: Our intent is to spotlight regional winners in subsequent editions, broadening our representation. Furthermore, we aim to provide emerging communities with models to navigate challenges and harness opportunities, especially in underrepresented areas.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

Engagement with communities was pursued through a variety of communication channels, including mailing lists, organisational and personal emails, as well as direct messages on our social media platforms. Additionally, our campaign gained widespread attention through its publication on a central notice, attracting a diverse range of communities and individuals globally to partake in our activities.

To enhance participation and diversify the scope of involvement, we extended invitations to numerous student photography clubs and professional institutions specializing in folklore. This approach not only enriched the breadth of our campaign but also facilitated the integration of varied perspectives and expertise, fostering a multifaceted and inclusive environment.

Through these efforts, we were able to create a confluence of ideas and contributions, drawing from the unique insights of each participating community and individual. This diverse assembly enabled us to foster a rich tapestry of perspectives, thereby enhancing the overall impact and reach of our campaign.

5. Documentation of your impact. Please use the two spaces below to share files and links that help tell your story and impact. This can be documentation that shows your results through testimonies, videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, etc.) social media posts, dashboards, etc.

6. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Strongly agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Strongly agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Strongly agree
G. Increased participants' feelings of belonging and connection to the movement. Strongly agree

7. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Certainly! We are delighted to share the multifaceted approach we adopted to engage participants and enrich content, particularly focusing on the inclusion of underrepresented groups:

1) Nurturing Leadership: We played a pivotal role in nurturing leadership skills, steering individuals through the intricacies of organising and seamlessly executing the campaign. 2) Imparting Technical Proficiency: We were at the forefront of disseminating technical knowledge, ensuring participants were well-equipped with the necessary skills to contribute effectively. 3) Enhancing Communication Capacities: Our focus on bolstering communication skills was pivotal, facilitating meticulous report work and fostering clearer and more effective dialogue. 4) Fostering Local Community Ties: We emphasised the importance of local community building skills, laying the foundation for stronger, more inclusive community engagement and involvement. 5) Cultivating Partnership Acumen: We guided organizers on building local partnerships, offering strategies and continuous support for outreach and proposals. 6) Female Participation: Our strategy emphasizes promoting leadership among women, both new and experienced. We urge every Feminism and Folklore campaign to include at least one female coordinator. This isn't just about representation but empowerment and skill development. We aim for these empowered women to inspire community growth and achieve a balanced society.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

During this period, our learning journey was enriched by several enlightening experiences. We delved into the intricacies of integrating new communities, tailoring our support to address their unique needs and challenges, particularly those related to internet access. By furnishing them with internet and childcare support, we facilitated their capability to organize campaigns effectively, enhancing their participation and contribution.

Moreover, our understanding of fostering partnerships has grown significantly. We've acquired skills in collaborating with various countries, enabling them to host their distinct versions of Wiki Loves Folklore. This has not only diversified our reach but also added a plethora of cultural nuances to our repository. These learnings are pivotal, shaping our approach and strategy for future endeavors and helping us build a more inclusive and vibrant community

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

During the implementation of our activities, we encountered an unexpected challenge that had considerable implications on the project. The primary issue arose from a breakdown in communication with Hardarshan Benipal, who was responsible for managing the first instalment of funds. Despite rigorous attempts by the International Team and coordinators to re-establish contact, our efforts were met with silence.

This communication gap led to notable discrepancies in managing project expenses and posed a significant obstacle in the smooth progression of our activities. Several organizers, unfortunately, did not receive the support they were anticipating, leading to a sense of discouragement within the community.

We have been proactive in addressing this issue, and Mr. Benipal is currently in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation's Grants team to resolve the matter. This unexpected turn of events has been a learning curve, underscoring the importance of robust communication channels and contingency planning to ensure the resilience and success of our projects

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We envision employing the insights gained from Wiki Loves Folklore to enhance the efficacy and alignment of future iterations with our project goals, given its annual recurrence every February and March. The ambition is to develop proprietary tools for the meticulous collection of statistics and the formulation of an effective jury, thereby refining our presentation to the community. Additionally, we are eager to broaden our network of organizers from various countries for the Wiki Loves Folklore photography contest, while also encouraging more Wikipedia editions to participate in both feminism and folklore contests. This expansion and diversification of participation will further enrich the tapestry of cultural narratives we aim to preserve and share.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

Picture this: I'd lean in, eyes gleaming with the flicker of untold tales, and share a tale not of folklore, but of a journey through it. "You wouldn't believe," I’d begin, "the tapestry of traditions we unravelled in Wiki Loves Folklore! It was like opening a treasure chest, each submission a gem gleaming with tales from forgotten corners of the world. But here’s the fascinating bit – the challenge wasn’t in finding the treasures; it was in understanding their true worth, seeing the unseen, hearing the unspoken in every photograph, every story. It felt like being a time traveller and a treasure hunter, discovering pieces of the past, and bringing them into the light, giving them a voice in our symphony of shared knowledge. That, my friend, was not just work; it was a magical adventure!"

12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work. For instance, guides, training material, presentations, work processes, or any other material the team has created to document and transfer knowledge about your work and can be useful for others. Please share any specific resources that you are creating, adapting/contextualizing in ways that are unique to your context (i.e. training material).

Part 5: Sense of belonging and collaboration[edit]

21. What would it mean for your organization to feel a sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement?

Wiki Loves Folklore is a distinct melody in the Wikimedia symphony, enriching the collective with unique tales of diverse heritages. As Wiki Loves Folklore, we contribute a voice that sings of human stories, harmonizing with other knowledge keepers. This collaboration aims to preserve and celebrate humanity's diverse tales, ensuring each story is valued in our shared pursuit of free knowledge.

Joining Wiki Loves Folklore's international team is akin to uniting with explorers, each contributing unique skills to discover cultural wisdom. Our joint efforts craft a larger narrative of global heritage, emphasizing the importance of every member's contribution. Together, we champion cultural preservation, value diversity, and aim to create a rich tapestry of shared knowledge.

22. How has your (for individual grantees) or your group/organization’s (for organizational grantees) sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement changed over the fund period?

Increased significantly

23. If you would like to, please share why it has changed in this way.

Wiki Loves Folklore, initially a newcomer to the Wikimedia landscape, is like a migratory bird exploring the knowledge islands. With each grant, it forged deeper connections and integrated traditions. Over time, what was once a mere stopover became home, and its presence deeply enriched the free knowledge movement, bringing unity and spreading stories across the horizon.

24. How has your group/organization’s sense of personal investment in the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement changed over the fund period?

Increased significantly

25. If you would like to, please share why it has changed in this way.

WLF began as a small seedling in the Wikimedia garden. Each investment caused it to grow deeper and more intertwined with the vast roots of community knowledge. Nurtured by resources, it matured into a mighty tree, with branches connecting with other free knowledge entities. Every leaf told a story, and each fruit symbolized a shared tradition. This wasn't mere growth, but a profound transformation, marking its integral role in safeguarding folklore treasures. Today, WLF is not just nurtured by the garden but actively enriches the entire ecosystem of collective wisdom.

26. Are there other movements besides the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement that play a central role in your motivation to contribute to Wikimedia projects? (for example, Black Lives Matter, Feminist movement, Climate Justice, or other activism spaces) If so, please describe it below.

Envision Wiki Loves Folklore as a bee, buzzing with zeal, not solely fueled by the nectar of the Wikimedia garden. This bee flits among diverse blossoms – Open Source, Digital Humanities, and Cultural Preservation movements. Each flower represents a unique flavor of motivation, a different shade of passion. In the Open Source meadow, the bee sips on collaboration and freedom, in the Digital Humanities field, it feasts on interdisciplinary nectar, and in the Cultural Preservation orchard, it drinks deeply of heritage conservation. This multifloral nectar concocts a honey of diverse motivations, enriching Wiki Loves Folklore’s contributions to Wikimedia projects, and crafting a honeycomb where every cell is a testament to a story untold, a tradition unveiled, and a culture celebrated.

28. How often do you currently share what you have learned with other Wikimedia Foundation grantees, and learn from them?

We do this occasionally (less than once a month)

29. How does your organization currently share mutual learning with other grantees?
