Part 1 Understanding your work

[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

Last year, we struggled to maintain current partnership and build new ones. We hosted a photowalk for teenagers in cooperation of Seoul Youth Center, and an editathon for autistic people in collaboration of Estas, an autistic people group. We also run some project to support sister projects. For example, we ran Old Hangul Digitization Project to enhance Wikisource Contents, and hosted some ediathons on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Especially, We launched Wikidata Challenge Editahin during the Chuseok holiday season to draw skilled users and it was more successful than we expected.

One of our essential strategies was to improve professional contents on Korean Wikipedia, and we launched an editing program to enhance medical articles in cooperation with a Korean Wikipedia user.

Internationally, we collaborated with Wikimedia Taiwan, and hosted a sub-event of Wikimedia Asia Month. We sent souvenirs to the winners of the events in South Korea and Taiwan. We think it was a significant step for other international collaborations.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

Korean Wikipedia dose not have enough professional contents including medicine, because it has much less users than English Wikipedia. We set up a strategies and plans to improve those articles. We awarded volunteer hour to participants through a government-run platform to encourage them.

We used this approach for other projects including editathons and photowalks for teenagers or new users. It was a very good motivation for students, and most of schools in South Korea asked their students to do voluntary service for local society and earn volunteer hours through a government-run platform We could also promote that editing Wikipedia is a voluntary activity through that approach.

Our member also bridged between us and our partners. For example, we maintained a partnership with a neurodiversity advocacy group that our member joined, and we also built a new partnership with a research center through the member.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

As we mentioned, we maintained partnerships with a youth organization and nerodiversity advocacy group. We hosted a offline photowalk and editathon in cooperation of them. Especially, we launched an international event for the first time in collaboration with Wikiemdia Taiwan. We are planning to expand our international work with Wikimedians of Japan User Group and wikiemdia Taiwan.

Last year, we built a meaningful partnership with National Library of Korea. The organization was interested in our Old Hangul digitization projects, and we agreed that we would cooperate with each other to develop offline programs to digitize and type old documents owned by the organization.

5. Documentation of your impact. Please use the two spaces below to share files and links that help tell your story and impact. This can be documentation that shows your results through testimonies, videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, etc.) social media posts, dashboards, etc.

Part 2: Your main learning

[edit]

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

We learned our new strategy was effective. Last year, we implemented our strategy for the first time. According the strategy, we set up plans and launched new activities. For example, one of the our strategies was to improve professional contents, and we planed to enhance cancer-related article in cooperation with a Korean Wikipedia user. We also planed to support underrepresented group activities (e.g. women, teenagers, and disabled people), and employed a part-timer to achieve it. The staff member successfully planed and hosted events for teenage users.

We also developed a new activity called Callenge Editathon. It was held during a holiday season on Wikidata, and we awarded volunteer hours and souvenirs according to how long they attended the event. We estimated this approach was very successful.

Moreover, we learned that we need to host events regularly to retain new users. For example, we run the Old Hangul Digitization project twice a year, and some of the participant keep joining the activity.

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

Originally we planed to launch a new event including a photowalk or build a new partnership to support sexual minority groups. Unfortunately, Korean society became more conservative about the sexual minorities, and many events for them were reduced and canceled. In this situation, we had to cancel or change our plan.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We will use our learning to evaluate which approach is effective to support skilled users and retain new users. We will host the Challenge editathons during holiday seasons to support sister projects. We also use a similar approach to the Old Hangul Digitization project for other projects to retain new users and improve articles related to minorities.

We realized we need to discover new marginalized groups and support them. We concluded the one of the groups in Korea is people living in the noncapital region. We will host event for them and support their activities.

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work. For instance, guides, training material, presentations, work processes, or any other material the team has created to document and transfer knowledge about your work and can be useful for others. Please share any specific resources that you are creating, adapting/contextualizing in ways that are unique to your context (i.e. training material).

17a. Which of the following factors most helped you to build capacities? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Peer to peer learning with other community members in conferences/events, Peer to peer learning with other community members in community/ies of practice* (structured and continuous learning and sharing spaces)

17b. Which of the following factors hindered your ability to build capacities? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Lack of knowledge of available capacity building opportunities, Lack of staff time to participate in capacity building/training, Lack of training that fits contextual needs and interests, Lack of financial resources, Barriers to access training because of language

19. Partnerships over the funding period.

Over the fund period...
A. We built strategic partnerships with other institutions or groups that will help us grow in the medium term (3 year time frame) Agree
B. The partnerships we built with other institutions or groups helped to bring in more contributors from underrepresented groups Agree
C. The partnerships we built with other institutions or groups helped to build out more content on underrepresented topics/groups Agree

19a. Which of the following factors most helped you to build partnerships? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Permanent staff outreach, Volunteers from our communities

19b. Which of the following factors hindered your ability to build partnerships? Please pick a MAXIMUM of the three most relevant factors.

Lack of interest from partners, Difficulties specific to our context that hindered partnerships, Lack of institutional support from the Wikimedia Foundation

20. Please share your learning about strategies to build partnerships with other institutions and groups and any other learning about working with partners?

We have struggled to build a long-term partnership with women and sexual minority groups. We hosted some successful event with women groups, but we failed to maintain the partnership, because they were just interested in hosting short-term events and promoting their campaign. In Korea, people are not aware of Wikipedia gender gap issue. Building partnership with sexual minority groups are more difficult than women groups, because South Korea is still conservative, and the sexual minorities don't want to open up their identity in public.

Part 5: Sense of belonging and collaboration

[edit]

21. What would it mean for your organization to feel a sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement?

Feeling a sense of belonging means that users can join our online/offline events, feel free in our events and organize their own events without hesitation. We employed a part-time staff member to communicate with users, especially teenage users last year. Moreover, we regularly hosted offline events to help community members to feel free when they talk with other users and about Wikimedia issues. We also hoped that they bonded in the events.

22. How has your (for individual grantees) or your group/organization’s (for organizational grantees) sense of belonging to the Wikimedia or free knowledge movement changed over the fund period?

Somewhat increased

23. If you would like to, please share why it has changed in this way.
