Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?

Wikimedians of the Levant is a user group volunteered from Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan, which has run since 2015. This year it has a fallen point, but it is successfully achieved to react, having more GLAMs and achieving the Strategic goal which are:
  • Capacity and community development : To upscale the community in both number and skill, ensuring a sustainable knowledge transfer and potential for further future scaling, as also suggested by the 2030 Strategy (recommendation 6).
  • Support Wikimedia Projects content : To improve and expand Wikimedia projects, thus sticking to our primary goal of improving content and impact (related to recommendation 8 from the movement strategy).
  • Partnerships in education and GLAM : To create long-term partnerships and outreach that support us in achieving our crucial mission and enhancing the rest of our goals altogether (related to recommendation 5 from the movement strategy).

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?

The absence of Board members affected achieving the goal we were looking for. Even though we made good achievements and that was the first time we made a connection with a historical, feminist, and professor where we achieved to have an important documentary for our community. On the other hand, we achieved doing partnership with two Universities in Palestine and we run an educational program there.

3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?

1. Absence of the final decision-making in the user group: While we made the communications and we started to mention workshops and competitions but as there were no board members to lead the communication with JOSA, it was challenging to make a good connection and reunite the group.
2. Absence of legal recognition of the user group: Having legal recognition from WMF of the user group is acceptable worldwide to have a legal partnership.
3. Sustainability of users to edit on Wikimedia Projects: We think the answer by having advanced edit-a-thon, workshops, and competitions oriented for them.

4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.

1. Arabic Wikipedia village pump
2. Social media channels for Arabic Wikipedia (Facebook & Telegram)
3. Wikipedia Banners
4. Social media channels for Wikimedians of the Levant (Facebook and Twitter)

5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.

We share reflections in our monthly meeting online via Jitsi with the Levant community where we report the minutes of these sessions and add these results to its pages on Arabic Wikipedia or Meta page. We involved Arab women in our work and our organizers are from 4 countries and men and women.

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What have you learned so far about these areas during this period?

Since we set our timetable, usergroup members worked to edit the policy of the user group, plus to being able to active more in the community. This effect was not very clear in the first half of 2022. But as we advanced until the end of the year, group members start to be more comfortable in the group and addressing activities to do.

7. What are the next steps and opportunities you’ll be focusing on for the second half of your work?

We are looking to improve our user group by having new members and encouraging our members to be trainers and be more active in Wikimedia projects. Plus to introduce users to human rights, Gender Gap and the improve the Levantine culture in Arabic content
