Learning
[edit]Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
- For each of the location we partnered with a special needs focused institutions e.g.
- Lagos- Down Syndrome Foundation of Nigeria
Ibadan- The Department of Special Education, University of Ibadan
Oyo Township- College of Education (Special) Oyo.
- The involvement of Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation Inc helped to facilitate the partnership conversation among organizations that participated in this project.
- My engagement in this project has exposed me to different strata of needs of people living with disabilities which will help me in preparing well for other similar projects in the future. I have come to the understanding that needs and rate of assimilation differs from people with various impairments such as hearing, visuals and physical.
- What did not work so well?
- We were unable to run a smooth edit-athon because most of this class of people needs a special tool to aid their contribution which were not available.g, visually impaired needs special software to aid contribution on wikipedia, Hearing Impairment needs a trained Sign Language Interpreter.
- We equally observed that due to the nature of our participants, given their special needs which affects the rate of their assimilation,a day or two days training will not make much impact.
- The project was extended because our program clashed with some of the partners calendar.
- What would you do differently next time?
- We need to request for more time for the training
- Workout a partnership that will allow along term relationship with a special needs focused institutions.
- Work closely with any of the interested partner to avoid clash of programs
- Ensure we request for funding to procure some of the identified special tools to aid participation.
