Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Overall I'm happy with how the project went. We met and even exceeded most of our goals.

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
50 participants 28+ 28 people participated in the contest and we had about 20 attendees in the Webinar.
200 database items 1744 database items The number of public domain items added by contributors exceeded expectations
200 Wikidata Items The wikidata entries for the database items are still being worked on due to difficulty verifying some of the entries.
500000 261000 this is the cumulative amount of views the videos had on Instagram and Facebook. The videos were also shared on Youtube but weren't promoted there so I did not include Youtube views

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

I'd say the most successful part of this project was the amount of awareness we were able to create about the existence and pros of the Public Domain, both online through sharing the videos and the Webinar and offline through discussion

  • What did not work so well?

We underestimated the response we would get from the contest and due to only requesting the name of the works, year of publication and name of the creator, it was hard to verify a lot of the entries, especially the art works.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Next time we would definitely request more information from participants regarding the Public Domain items they submitted.

Responses to Questions from Davit

[edit]

1. Would you be able to describe more about "1744 database items" added to Wikidata? Did you use any tool to measure them? Would you please link the list to your report?

During the contest, we asked participants to add items that were in the public domain to the table on the contest page. The required fields were Type of Creative work, Title, Year of creation and Name of Creator. After the contest ended, we exported the entries as a .csv document and then analyzed and removed ineligible entries.

2. When do you plan to complete the targeted 200 Wikidata items?

The targeted 200 Wikidata items will be completed by the end of October. All the items will link to this Wikidata item.

3. Why didn't you complete this target?

At the end of the contest we realized we a lot more contributions than we had anticipated. We also realized we made a mistake in not adding additional criteria for contributions. This was because we had/have a difficult time verifying some of the contributions and finding more information about them with which to create the wikidata items. For example, it has been difficult to find images of a lot of the artwork enter. So creating the Wikidata items has been a little slow because we do not want to the only information in the items to be just the title, year of creation and name of the author.

4. How did you determine the winners given that no contributions to Wikidata have been made?

The winners were determined based on who made the highest number of valid contributions.

5. Could you please list the usernames of those who received the prizes? What did you give as prizes?

  1. 1st place winner - User:Ibaja055 received a $120 Jumia voucher
  2. 2nd place winner - User:Tesleemah received an $80 Shoprite voucher
  3. 3rd place winner - User:Atibrarian received a $60 Jumia voucher
  4. 4th place winner - User:Hopilo12 received a $40 Shoprite voucher

(Each of the winners was given the opportunity to choose a voucher of their preference to avoid giving them a prize they couldn't use)

6. I would also like to learn about the impact these videos brought to your community aside from the views.

Other than the views generated from the videos, they also created more visibility for the Public Domain in Nigeria. They sparked discussions and raised awareness about the existence of the public domain, what constitutes the public domain, various copyright laws and the usefulness/potential of the public domain and public domain items.

7. Could you please confirm that you retain all expense documents from your project?

I still have all expense documents from this project
