Public Domain Day 2022 Celebration in Nigeria
The public domain refers to creative works which are not protected by any intellectual property rights. Nigeria has a lot of works in the public domain. However, most of these aren't being utilized because of a general lack of awareness about what the public domain is, what is in the public domain as well as copyright laws. We plan to celebrate public domain day 2022 in Nigeria and increase awareness in Nigeria about the public domain.

  • Create a database of public domain works in the Nigerian space

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

1. Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?

1. Creating/Increasing awareness about the public domain

  • Videos: 2 videos explaining the public domain will be recorded.
  • Social Media Campaign: The videos will be shared and promoted on various social media, including Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook.

2. Creating a database of public domain works

  • A contest: We will create a database of Nigerian works in the public domain and organize an online contest for people to identify Nigerian works in the public domain and add them to the database. The contest would be on for 30 days..
  • After the contest is over, we will create Wikidata items for every public domain work in the database.

3. We will organize a webinar for the celebration of public domain day.

2. How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?

3. What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?

By the end of this project, we hope to have identified and created a database of Nigerian public domain works with at least 200 items. We also hope to have increased awareness generally in Nigeria about the public domain. During the project, participant emails and phone numbers will be collected and they will be added to a WhatsApp group chat which will be used to engage participants. The group chat will remain active even after the end of the project

4. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

  • Support Support I am very excited to see ideas to promote Open Access to cultural heritage go into action. This is a great initiative, where a project model created in one part of the world is adopted in another. I think the chosen methods seem balanced for this local context. It will be interesting to know which part of the campaign worked best: the contest, the social media campaign, collecting the data, import to Wikidata, or the webinar. There are many parts, fewer would be enough as well. It will be important to evaluate to learn what works best. – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) 🦜 04:47, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
