Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Unfortunately we in this project could not get the result that we expected. Many articles that were created during the competition were too short, because of which they failed to join the competition, according to the rules. Also, some participants dishonestly reacted to the competition and began to violate copyrights (Copyvio). This incident was used by some Wikipedia users and accused the organizers of the contest of embezzlement of funds donated to us by the WMF, as among the winners there was a participant who violated copyrights. But we reconsidered the results and came to the conclusion that the participants who violated the rules should not receive prizes, so we canceled the results for the second and third place. Since most of the articles on the criteria of the contest could not be a winner, we (the organizers) decided to award only the winner of the first place, who improved the article on all the norms of the contest, and the remaining funds decided to return to the WMF. Thus a controversial issue was resolved. Also, all the participants who wanted to receive a certificate of participation in the contest, received them.

So, our goals:

  1. Recruit new editors: at least two user were new Wikipedians.
  2. Increase skills for existing editors: during the competition, it became apparent that such an image of the activity increases the skills of the Wikipedians. For example: the quality of articles is improved every time.
  3. Add or improve content: during the contest, more than 80 new articles were created, and more than 10 articles were improved.
  4. Create new articles about the Georgian Democratic Republic and about independent Georgia: as above, a total of more than 80 articles were created about Georgian Democratic Republic.
  5. Popularization of Georgian Wikipedia and UG-GE: with the help of this contest and social network we have tried this.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Number of participants: 15-20 ~8 Unfortunately fewer people were involved than we expected.
Number of new editors: 5-10 ~2 unfortunately very few new Wikipedians became interested in the contest.
Number of articles created or improved: 35-45 103 Despite the small number of participants, the number of created or improved articles exceeded our expectations.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
We were able to attract as many participants as possible to participate in the contest, despite the fact that the contest was held in May, which is very busy for Wikipedians, since most Wikipedians are students (School or University).
  • What did not work so well?
Unfortunately some participants did not neglect the laws of Wikipedia and upload non-free materials, because of what we had to cancel prizes for the second and third place. Also, we could not stop some of the participants who began to manipulate this fact.
  • What would you do differently next time?

The next time, we will primarily pay more attention to the participants of the competitions would be more informed by the laws of the Georgian Wikipedia before starting work.
