Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Wiki Loves Earth is a photo competition aimed at improving coverage of natural protected areas.  This is the second time that Wikimedia Portugal organizes this competition, after 2015. We were satisfied with the number of people participating and the quality of the submissions, even if we did not get as many photos uploaded during this year’s Wiki Loves Earth competition as initially expected. The quality, however, was quite good. We are still working on using these photos on the projects, but we expect that we will be able to reach the target we set out in the next months.

Wikidata Days 2019 was an event at the Library of the NOVA School of Business and Economics (New University of Lisbon), and Social Sciences DataLab, in collaboration with Wikimedia Portugal and Wiki Movimento Brasil, with the objective to gather a group of people interested in Open Data and Open Science projects, increasing knowledge about these subjects and building new capacities and improving existing ones.

The program consisted of two days filled with presentations focused on the use of Wikidata for the dissemination and communication of science, projects with social impact with the use of open data and a hackathon dedicated to the exploration of structured data tools used with several purposes. Two wikimedians from outside Portugal were invited: Alessandro Marchetti (Wikimedia Italy, WikiClassics, Wikimedia CH, WikiDonne) and Iván Hernández-Cazorla (Wikimedia Spain), as well as members of Wikimedia Portugal (Ana Cravo and Paulo Perneta), and other speakers from several areas, namely Helena Patrício (National Library of Portugal), Jorge Pinho (Open Street Map), João Pina (VOST.pt),  and Ricardo Lafuente (Journalism++) that presented nationwide projects with great social impact; and a third day, which combined practical workshops and wikidata editing on the fly using cellphones with a cultural photowalk in Cascais, with the help of a partner from the local cultural and artistic scene, Marita Ferreira.

As for Wikidata Days 2019, the project was very successful,  with a lot of engagement from the people participating, fostering a lot of collaboration and new partnerships. Participants, including a number of academics felt highly motivated to contribute to the projects and they asserted a wish to repeat the experience on a regular basis. One of the participants, Core, attended Wikimania on his own, inspired by his participation on the event.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

We were able to populate Wikidata with all the information from the locations for Wiki Loves Earth, including fairly precise coordinates. This will be of huge value not only to organizing the next editions of WLE, but also for Wikidata and reusers.

According to empirical evidence and feedback collected at the time and afterwards, speakers for Wikidata Days were highly appreciated by the audience and really showcased the potential of Open Science and Wikidata to achieve social impact.

  • What did not work so well?

We did not have a good communication plan, and we did not have budget to promote the WLE contest. If we include that next time, we are confident that we will be able to surpass our target for this year.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We would include a communication plan in the planning and budgeting.

Finances

[edit]

Grant funds spent

[edit]

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on.

  • 400€ were spent on the prizes for Wiki Loves Earth. These were transferred to Wikimedia Spain (co-organizer of the contest) for disbursement to winners.
  •   253.94€ on transportation of invited speakers (including air travel for 1 person)
  • 387.75€ on food/meals for invited speakers and catering during event
  • 302.14€ on accomodation for invited speakers

Total spent: 1343.83€

Remaining funds

[edit]

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

Yes, we have 286.17€ remaining. We would like to request to use the remaining funds on 3 rollup screens about Wikimedia Portugal, for use for on-site promotion in the 3 main cities where events are being organized at the moment: Porto, Lisbon and Funchal. We currently have none.

Remaining funds have been used or will be used for other approved mission-aligned activities. This use has been requested in writing and approved by WMF.
