Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
    • In 2022, we introduced some new changes. We implemented the recommendations of the 2021 edition evaluation report. The report suggested that most of the poor contributions were made by new editors, and participation should be restricted to users who have created an account at least a year before the campaign and who have made at least 300 contributions to Wikipedia. The implementation of the 2021 evaluation report worked well, as most of the contributions were of high quality.
    • This year, we decided to introduce plaque awards and souvenirs as gift items for top contributors instead of gift vouchers. This addressed most problems associated with gifts in past editions. In past editions, it was difficult to get Amazon vouchers for winners as they do not work in most countries and it takes a lot of time to process them. There were also some concerns about monetary gifts. The replacement of Amazon gift cards with plaque awards and souvenirs worked well.
    • The uses of central Notice banner for logged users worked well and helped to derived people to the campaign.
    • Although, we were not able to fully implement the contest under General Suppport, the funding and support from the WMF worked well and enabled us to go organize the contest.
  • What did not work so well?
    • In 2022, we missed the deadline for the General Support Fund, and we had to run this with a rapid grant. We were unable to produce enough souvenirs for local organizers and other expenses.
    • There was a reduced budget for the project coordination.
  • What would you do differently next time?
    • We will ensure that we apply for the General Support Grant early enough for next edition.
    • We plan to call for new members to join the international organizing team, as we believe that new ideas can help us improve the campaign.
