Background[edit]

To achieve significant results at the end of its first annual plan, Wikimedia Community User Group Côte d'Ivoire has decided to focus on three programs:

  1. Content
  2. Diversity
  3. Community

Programs[edit]

Content

Most of the articles on Côte d'Ivoire are still stubs, due to the unavailability or inaccessibility of sources, and also limited resources required to edit them, including human resources. The Content Program aims to address these issues by going on the field to collect directly or indirectly data and sources from the stakeholders, engage local communities to contribute on Wikipedia and its sister projects through editathons. The Programme will be guided by the following activities:

  • A documentation project on Wikipedia and its sister projects (Commons, Wikivoyage) focusing on the 130 years of the establishment of Côte d'Ivoire's borders will enrich the articles on the history of the delineation of these borders by going out to meet/discover the authentic sources and resources that depict this important period in Côte d'Ivoire. This will be followed by 3 #1Lib1Ref workshops with GLAM partners in order to upload these sources onto Wikipedia.
  • As part of the Wiki Loves Africa contest to which the User Group has been taking part since 2014, a country-wide challenge involving professional photographers will be set up to encourage them to shoot original pictures and upload them to Commons for their use on other Wikimedia projects. An exhibition ceremony of the best photos will be held to promote their work and the open source philosophy.
  • Through the "1 community/1 editathon" project, three editathons will be conducted with the Wikipedia Academic Clubs and Territorial Teams of the User Group to engage the Wikimedia community in the editing commitment. These editathons will be scheduled in line with converging events such as Wikipedia's birthday (january 15), Francophone contribution month (march), etc. in order to amplify the impact of these contributive meetings with the Wikimedia movement on a global scale.

Objectives

Main: Increase the quality and quantity of content related to Côte d'Ivoire and Africa

  • Reach 30 participants at editathons and #1Lib1Ref workshops
  • Upload 100 images, including 40 in HD related to Côte d'Ivoire
  • Create/improve 30 articles about Côte d'Ivoire
  • Involve 5 professional photographers in Wiki Loves Africa contest
  • Convert 10 Wikipedians into regular contributors

Diversity

The emergence of the Wikimedia community in Côte d'Ivoire has led to the establishment of thematic, territorial and sectoral working groups on the one hand, and partnerships on the other. We have 2 Wikipedia Academic Clubs, 3 territorial groups (located in Bouaké, Korhogo, and Ferkessédougou), 2 thematic working groups (GLAM & WikiMousso – working group dedicated to gender activities), various partnerships (with APSID - Association of documentary resources professionals, Goethe-Institut, Internews - non-profit organization). Through the diversity programme, it will be about triggering initiatives that will allow the active participation of the various stakeholders mentioned above. The following activities are foreseen:

  • - African Wikimedia Developer, a program targeting IT students who belong to the User Group's Wikipedia Academic Clubs. Since writing is not their primary area of expertise, they will easily be able to get involved in this project, which is in line with their background. The initiative is a follow-up to a two-day training workshops held in 2018. By 2020, the goal is to reactivate the momentum built up through regular bimonthly meetings held around application development projects related to Wikimedia projects.
  • - Wikimousso is the working group in charge of promoting gender in the User Group's programs. The Working Group plans to organize 3 editathons and WikiMousso workshops for about 30 participants. The aim will be to address the representativeness of Ivorian (and African) women on Wikipedia and its sister projects. Some of the themes to be discussed are "Art+Feminism" (women in the field of art) and "Women politicians in Côte d'Ivoire and Africa".

Objectives

Main: Enable the active involvement of the User Group's various stakeholders in Wikimedia projects.

  • Reach 15 women at edithatons and workshops
  • Establish a Media Wiki working group with a minimum of 3 developers
  • Strengthen the dynamics of territorial Clubs and Working Groups
  • Recruit 20 members to local clubs and working groups

Community

The Programmes mentioned above require the deployment of equipped and experienced wikimedians who are available, with adequate logistical support and a user-friendly working environment. Hence the need to have, by 2019, a fully open and accessible office for the members of the User Group. Moreover, the User Group's projects and programmes are shaped during statutory meetings, such as the bimonthly meetings of the Executive Board, the Annual General Meeting, etc. These periodic gatherings require the availability of a specific logistics and dedicated human resources. As well, international meetings are good opportunities for capacity building of wikimedians, as they enable direct peer-to-peer learning. However, Ivorian wikimedians, and Africans in general, are not always present at these meetings, due not only to visa problems but also to the high competition to obtain the Foundation's grants. Thus, the User Group will set up a funding mechanism ($3500) to ensure the attendance of at least one of its active members at the African and Francophone meetings planned on the African continent in 2020. Participants will then be invited to share their acquired skills with other members through feedback sessions or the implementation of new projects.

Objectives

Main: Execute the User Group's 2019 action plan

  • Hold 4 working meetings (Executive Board + General Assembly + Working Group Meetings)
  • Facilitate the presence of more Ivorian Wikimedians in international meetings
  • Support the commitment of User Group volunteers to the execution of the 2019 action plan
