Event name
[edit]APS-STP Teaching Institute at the 28th Annual Convention of the Association for Psychological Science, held May 26-29, 2016 in Chicago, IL [1].
Participant connections
[edit]Christina Shane-Simpson and Patricia J. Brooks led an invited workshop titled "Implementing the APS Wikipedia Initiative in general education coursework" at the 23rd Annual APS-STP Teaching Institute [2]. Due to the short length of the workshop (50 minutes), the majority of time was devoted to implementation of Wikipedia editing in the classroom, highlighting key points from a recent article, published in February in anticipation of the workshop, for the APS Observer [3].
The facilitators demonstrated live editing of Wikipedia articles and launched a new article for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology. Session attendees generated ideas for the STP article during the workshop, which were inserted by one of the facilitators. Subsequent to the workshop, the facilitators have mentored novice Wikipedia editors in expanding the STP article from a stub to a larger article, with work still in progress.
At the workshop and at a booth set up by the Association for Psychological Science, the facilitators collected demographic information from conference attendees who were interested in learning more about teaching with Wikipedia, and forwarded the information (78 names and addresses) to the Wiki Education Foundation. Copies of the APS Observer article were made available to each person who expressed interest in teaching with Wikipedia.
Outcome
[edit]
- Option 1: Shared Experience:
Shane-Simpson and Brooks (wo)manned a booth in the Exhibit Hall and met high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members and research scientists while promoting the PSYCH+Feminism initiative as part of Wikipedia's Year of Science. They distributed hundreds of brochures from the Wiki Education Foundation on editing psychology articles and biographies. Due to overwhelming interest, the APS had to have more copies printed mid-conference. The two facilitators networked with APS staff member, Patti Martin, Director of Membership for the Association for Psychological Science, about updating promotional materials for the APS Wikipedia Initiative, including the design of a scavenger hunt for next year's conference. The facilitators have begun preparing updates for Wikipedia pages on the WikiProject_APS Wikipedia Initiative as well as WikiProject_Psychology.
