From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes, I met my goals.

1. To recruit new editors - Although some of our members encountered unexpected challenges and communicated their inability to attend the training and editathon as scheduled, we had 3 new editors who joined our community for the first time. And 2 Abuja-based Wiki editors who had not had the chance to attend our previous meetings also successfully joined the training and editathon event.

2. Add or improve content on Wikimedia Commons - All the participants were actively engaged in the training and editathon and contributed actively to the editathon with a total of 778 total edits and 459 Commons Uploads from 13 editors who actively participated excluding the facilitator and an editor unable to retrieve his Wiki account who did not participate in the editathon. Our dashboard shows the details: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Wikimedia_Nigeria_User_group_Abuja_Network/Wiki_Commons_Edit_a_thon/students/overview

3. Increase skills for existing editors - Our existing editors all increased their editing skills as they all learned about the Wikimedia Commons platform and how to upload and edit content on the platform. On the whole, the technical skills of our editors were improved by this training and editathon.

4. Improve visibility of the Network's activities - The visibility of the Network's activities continue to be promoted on our social media platforms and we are also expanding our networks with prospective partners such as the partnership we are currently exploring with the French Institute in Abuja to host the Wiki Gap event to mark the International Women's Day.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
(i) The organizer planned for one training and editathon event

(ii) The organizer planned having (25) participants in attendance

(iii) The organizer planned having (15) new editors

(iv) The organizer mapped out(100) Wikicommons items created/improved

(i)The one training and editathon event was accomplished.

(ii) There were only (15) participants in attendance at the event as many turned out unable to attend as they had registered and committed to attend.

(iii) There were only (3) new editors added to our community and (2) additional existing Abuja-based Wikimedia editors also attended our events for the first time.

(iv) The 13 editors that participated in the editathon achieved a total of 778 edits with 459 Commons Uploads at the end of the editathon contest.

The success of the event project was achieved (to the best of my knowledge) due to the cooperation of our Network's leadership team to ensure that participants were taught the basic principles of the Wikimedia Commons platform. Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

(i) The new venue secured worked excellently well to provide a very conducive environment for the training and editathon and we aim to continue using the space for future events.

(ii) Training participants in a step-by-step process to editing on Wikimedia Commons also served to build the technical skills of our editors.

(iii) Providing branded Wikimedia tshirts to editors also strengthened the ownership and sense of belonging for our network members.

(iv) Challenging participants to strive for the prizes for the editathon contest also kept members engaged and resulted in the commendable participation evidenced on our event dashboard.

(v) Refreshments

  • What did not work so well?

(i) Attendance did not turn out as expected as 21 members had registered to attend the event, but turned out to send apologies due to challenges they experienced including the challenge of accessing cash to transport to the venue.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We will push our registration process to overbook where possible so that the best attendance is achieved, and maybe also prioritize transport support for participants.
