Project summary[edit]

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

The "OriginAfrica" project taget is to invites people to submit media content highlighting the richness, diversity, and beauty of Africa in an effort to close the large coverage gap of African issues on Wikipedia. Despite the fact that Wikimedia covers millions of topics, African-related themes are still underrepresented. This is partially because African-related information can be freely contributed to Wikimedia, including photographs, videos, and audio.

The initiative's goal is to project is create an awareness campaign to introduce Wikimedia to the community of Eha-Amufu and showcase the manufacturing and creative processes across the continent by inviting media representations. In order to effectively capture the essence of African creativity, contributors are urged to submit photographs, audio recordings, and videos that prioritize the process of creation over the final product.

This project seeks to improve the portrayal of African cultures, customs, and landscapes while encouraging a stronger feeling of cultural appreciation and understanding globally through the promotion of the visual celebration of Africa on Wikimedia Commons. We hope to encourage people to donate their media assets by means of focused outreach initiatives and community involvement. This will enhance the content on Wikimedia Commons and advance a more inclusive and thorough portrayal of Africa's history and accomplishments.

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

In addition to planning a training/practical session on how to create uploads, add appropriate categories, and convert audio and video materials to formats supported on Wikimedia Commons, I will lead the term to other creative locations within the Eha-Amufu senatorial area. Among the places to see are fashion designers, carpentry shops, yam barns, Rice Miles, palm oil extraction sites, local potters and basin makers, thatch house makers, basket weavers, local decorators, and the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at Federal College of Education, Eha Amufu for creative artwork exploration.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? I have posted a notification on the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria talk page. Here is the link: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria#OriginAfrica

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?

Participants will be notified about the program through the University of Nigeria Wikimedia community forum, WhatsApp messenger and physical meetings/invitations and group invitations to different departments within the federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu community.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
Yes, I do have experienced Wikimedians to help facilitate the event alongside my humble self [[User:Ugoji.john (talk) 06:27, 15 March 2024 (UTC)]]. They include among others;

User:Ngozi osadebe
User:Bidemi Bernice
5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

The major equipment needed for this project are; laptop computers, wifi routers, power source and projectors. We intend hiring these items from the Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu ICT unit during the physical event. Most of the participants have personal computers to continue working with after the training days. As regarding skills, the community is endowed with an array of experienced editors who can easily carry the new editors along.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

Follow-up sessions will be held online via WhatsApp where we will have continuous engagements to provide assistance to participants and also to share vital help tips.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

The "OriginAfrica" initiative provides a singular chance to honor the diversity and richness of African culture via Wikimedia Commons by encouraging the submission of media content that highlights the inventiveness of the continent. This effort, which emphasizes the idea of creation, not only enhances Wikimedia's coverage of African issues but also promotes a broader respect and understanding of culture across the globe. Contributors can help promote African heritage, customs, and landscapes by submitting images, audio files, and videos. This will help create a more inclusive and thorough representation of Africa on one of the biggest online information platforms in the world.
