The University of Nigeria Wiki Fan Club Photowalk for the Wiki Loves Earth 2022 was a success. The photos of Adada River were uploaded and participants learnt new things about Wikimedia Commons especially new editors.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
100 uploads 132 uploads The target was that each participants should upload 5 photos to produce 100 photos for the targeted 20 participants. The organizer explained the contest details and having read the contest page, some participants added more than required. This contributed greatly to increasing the project goal.
20 Editors 20Editors 8 old participants successfully registered on the dashboard, 7 new editors were equally trained about Wikimedia Commons and they successfully created an account while the remaining 5 new participants had their IP addresses globally blocked on the day of the Photowalk upon creating an account. They couldn't upload because their block issue was to end in August 19th.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experi

ence by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • What did not work so well?
  • What would you do differently next time?

What worked well

Attendance was very much encouraging. One of our new editors joined us that day because she saw our bus flex banner while we were yet to move to our location. The banner said so much about University of Nigeria Wiki Fan Club without us talking. Our participants uploaded their photos at the Adada River on their whatapp status and Facebook timelines. As a result of the cool entertainment( food, soft drinks ND bottle water) and learning they received, their friends desired to join us. I accepted them for our future projects.

What did not work well

At arrival to Adada River, I discovered that it was not a natural waterfall rather, it was more like a constructed river with a cascade where water flows from down to the swimming area.

It didn't correspond to my project title Adada Waterfall, nevertheless, I learnt the importance of being a personal witness to something than what I was told. My team also learnt from this experience.

Also, Adada River location was in the thick rural areas. We lost access to internet connection at arrival which affected immediate uploading of photos. As the organizer, I encouraged them to take lots of photos of the landscape to upload later. Some heeded to this while others didn't not because the euphoria died down in the subsequent days.

I had to deal with lateness of all participants, nevertheless, it didn't affect the project goal

The global IP address block issue was discouraging to the other 5 participants because they felt they were losing alot. They were advised to take pictures of the River but having read the contest page and understood it, they saw the end of the Wiki Loves Earth 2022 and compared it to their unblocking date, they lost the motivation to take pictures but rather enjoyed themselves during the Photowalk .

What would you do differently next time

As an organizer, I will be strict with punctuality by fixing the time an hour before the main time. This is in order to defeat lateness from participants.

I would like to thank Wikimedia User Group Nigeria for the support given to me during the course of University of Nigeria Wiki Fan Club Photowalk at Adada River. It was a period of learning and unlearning many things about volunteering. I look forward to more of this.

I would like the issue of global IP address to be addressed. This is in order to encourage new editors to keep contributing to free knowledge
