Wiki Loves Africa aims to redefine the African narrative using media and to also to give emerging Wikimedia communities an opportunity to interface with the open knowledge movement. Igala Wikimedia Community will be participating in 2024 for the first time. The Theme for the 2024 contest is Africa Create and will provide an opportunity for submission of media that includes submissions of media that portray the process of creating, inventing, manufacturing culturally defined items, make-up, art, hairstyles, music, dance, clothes and woven materials etc. Basically, elements that promote Africa's rich heritage and culture expressed through music, song, dance, and/or movement.

  1. Recruit new editors
  2. Capacity building
  3. Submitting photos, audio, videos, graphics etc in line with the theme which will be used on Wikipedia, Wikidata and other sister projects.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

  • Training - Mobile phone photography, Quality photos, Encyclopedic videos etc
  • Webinar - Wikimedia Commons basics, Introduction to Categories, etc
  • Workshop - Image editing tools, Video editing Sound editing etc
  • Photowalk - Going out in group to locations to capture Images
  • Edit-a-thon to upload images to commons

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Social media channel (WhatsApp group, Facebook, Twitter, Telegram) and mailing list.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof of availability)

Yes, Digital cameras, phones and laptops (for photo and video editing)

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will organize office hours, trainings and workshops to engage participants and address their challenges while we onboard them to other projects.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project will help to bring quality images in line with Wiki Loves Africca theme Africa Create to Wikimedia Commons where it can be used on Wikimedia projects and beyond.

We will use the outreach dashboard to track all uploads

Resources[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

Ogalihillary will keep communication active to keep everyone informed and will also manage logistics with regards to the training, webinar, workshop, photowalk and edit-a-thon. Dnshitobu will provide technical support owing to his rich experience with Wikimedia projects organizations.

AgnesAbah will coordinate between and among all stakeholders to ensure the project is successful.

We have no support from anywhere.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  • Transportation to location - ₦110,000
  • Feeding - ₦125,000 for 20 participants and 2 facilitators
  • Printing of vest - ₦88,000 for 20 participants and 2 facilitators
  • Prizes - ₦80,000 for top 5
  • Data allowance - ₦22,000

Strong support Strong support The Igala community has been contributing on the incubator Wikipedia and if this funded, it will help them diversify their area of expertise and also widen their contribution net scope to the various Wikimedia projects. This isn't just an opportunity to participate but an unification of members towards the broader perspective of Wikimedia projects that will lead to identification of individual niches.
