Feedback[edit]

Hi Jeph, thanks for submitting this report! A few thoughts/questions:

  • I can see that you've been learning and working your way through the not-insignificant development challenges that come up in a technical project of this nature. But, it feels difficult to evaluate the progress from the outside without any links to what you've got so far - do you have links to the prototype, any code, etc that you're making either on-wiki, or have in another code repository? Screen shots or anything else would also be helpful. Those things will be extra crucial to provide in your final report. Even though you haven't yet spent any funds on UI (and I know sharing half-done things isn't always easy!), links to raw undone things are still really helpful for us to understand how the project stands right now. :-)
  • I really appreciate the challenge you're sharing around balancing this project with another job - I wonder if you'd care to share how many hours you're finding it necessary to put towards this project each week in order to make progress to your 6-month goal. That information could be quite helpful for future grantees to benchmark their time against.
  • Are you documenting anywhere how you've gotten over the technical challenge keeping the server burden minimal in going from wikitext to html? It would be nice for anyone working on similar projects in the future to have the benefit of details in terms of what solutions you tried, what didn't work, and what did work when solving this.
  • You mention that being part of IEG has helped you interact more with other users, which is interesting, and I'd love to hear more about that. Are there channels you've been using to connect with other people as you're working on this project that have been particularly helpful? Have you found ways to connect with other technical Wikipedians to discuss some of the hurdles you've mentioned, or do you find yourself troubleshooting on your own most of the time?
  • Finally, based on the next steps you've identified, I'd be curious to hear if you feel like the project is on-track to complete in 3 more months. Do you anticipate any changes to the schedule or to how you'd planned to use your funding?

Looking forward to seeing what the next 3 months will bring, congratulations on the work you've accomplished so far. Cheers! Siko (WMF) (talk) 18:56, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm pushing my code to Wikireplay.
  • I usually end up working on the project only on the weekends , week days are generally action packed at work.
  • I'm using Instaview and I'm modifying it for my needs.
  • I think the project will be completed on time , my spending plans still remain the same.--Jeph paul (talk) 16:56, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for these answers! How about adding the link to your github code repository to the "midpoint outcomes" section of your report, where others can find it easier than on this talkpage? Siko (WMF) (talk) 23:15, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
