Add topicCoding help
[edit]i want to code but i am not able to code would u help me :) — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hayati123 (talk) 18:28, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Hayati123: This is a really good question. I think if more women learn to code, more will edit Wikipedia.
- I recommend the (free, open!) textbook, How to Think Like a Computer Scientist: Learning with Python. I know girls who have taught themselves to code just by working through it, coding all the exercizes. It will probably take you most of a month, but once you have finished, you will have done the equivalent of two university courses! You will also be able to do many coding jobs.
- You will need a computer you can run your own programs on. If this is a problem (amazingly, lots of schools won't let you program on their computers!), ask the Wikipedia community for help.
- If your computer is a laptop, I recommend getting a plug-in keyboard and mouse, and propping up the screen on a box, so that the screen is the same height as your eyes and the keyboard and mouse are the same height as your elbows when your arms are at your side (see en:repetitive strain injury for an image).
- The How to Think Like a Computer Scientist book has been translated into languages including German, Spanish, and French; would it be useful to translate it into some Ghanaian languages? HLHJ (talk) 09:15, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
- Python is an excellent beginner's language and is supported on Wikimedia Labs if you need a place to run bots or write web tools for the community. I also recommend the Dive Into Python. There's also JavaScript, despite it not being a good language, is extremely easy to setup and more useful now it includes JQuery. Dispenser (talk) 16:42, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
Combining ideas?
[edit]Hi Jwale2. Thanks so much for your idea and efforts to support more girls in tech! I would recommend discussing your idea with the project managers for another Inspire Campaign idea, Wikineedsgirls, who are hoping to train more girls in Ghana how to edit Wikipedia. It would be great if you could combine efforts and work together! Pinging Rberchie and Flixtey for their input. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 21:50, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Alex Wang (WMF) for alerting us on this. I am extremely excited to see Edit Ghana at work, these were participants of the Edit Ghana Project and am overwhelmed that they show their passion and commitment to wiki movement. I have longed for such participation from the Ghanaian community and i guess now my work is yielding fruits. However i think i concur with your advice, Jwale2 and team, lets look at working on this together as our campaign WikiNeedsGirls is similar to this, can use some more volunteers and ensure a unified effort from Ghana. Flixtey (talk) 10:27, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Flixtey. Hope you and Jwale2 can coordinate! Great to hear that Jwale2 participated in Edit Ghana and congrats on growing the community! (talk) 16:53, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Hi Jwale2 I think Alex Wang (WMF),makes a good suggestion.Since we are all in Ghana and the project is similar we can merge our ideas and do one project.I went through your page but didn't really understand the activities you want to undertake but in anyway it will be nice to work with you regards.--Rberchie (talk) 20:24, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your recommendations,(Alex Wang (WMF))would be cool if work with you guys Flixtey and Rberchie

Merging the project
[edit]We have noticed a similar idea of a project has been drawn by other members of the Wikimedia Ghana Usergroup. We deem both ideas similar and workable together. To reduce duplicates and to ensure maximum work done we are merging with the Wikineedsgirls team to ensure unified efforts towards maximaizing our potentials. Andrews Lartey (talk) 17:10, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Andrews Lartey . Thanks so much for the update. I will remove the request from the proposal category and look forward to a combined proposal. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 16:08, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
